For a while now, I’ve been saying that Moses Itauma has been moved at just about the right pace.
There was never any point throwing him in with the sharks before he was ready, but there also comes a stage where prospects have to stop being prospects and start proving they belong among the contenders.
The problem was that we were supposed to have had that conversation already.
Dillian Whyte was meant to be the test.
Instead, Moses Itauma blasted him out in 119 seconds.
As impressive as that knockout was, it left us with the same questions we’d had before. How good is Moses Itauma really? How does he react under pressure? What happens if somebody drags him into the later rounds?
That’s why Moses Itauma vs Filip Hrgovic feels like the perfect fight at the perfect time.
Not because Hrgovic is in his prime.
Not because this is the biggest name available.
But because he might be exactly the opponent needed to tell us whether all the hype surrounding Itauma is justified.
Dillian Whyte Never Had Time To Ask The Questions
Going into the Whyte fight, there were genuine reasons to be excited.
Here was a former world title challenger with years of experience and plenty of big nights behind him. Even though Whyte wasn’t the fighter he had once been, many people expected him to provide the toughest test of Itauma’s career.
Instead, the fight was over almost before it had begun.
Itauma’s performance was spectacular, but it didn’t really answer anything.
It almost created a strange situation where the more impressive he looked, the harder it became to judge where he actually stood.
Because knocking somebody out in under two minutes tells us plenty about your power.
It doesn’t necessarily tell us about your patience.
Your engine.
Your ability to adapt.
Or how you react when Plan A doesn’t work.
Those are the things that separate contenders from champions.
Filip Hrgovic Might Be The Perfect Opponent
Personally, I love this fight.
Some people will look at Filip Hrgovic’s recent setbacks and dismiss him. I think that would be a mistake.
No, he’s not operating at his absolute best anymore.
But that’s precisely why I think this fight makes so much sense.
Hrgovic is still dangerous.
He’s still tough.
He’s still experienced.
And he’s still good enough to make life uncomfortable for anybody who takes him lightly.
The casual fans probably won’t be blown away by the name, but hardcore boxing fans understand exactly what this fight represents.
This isn’t a gimmick.
This isn’t a stay-busy fight.
And this certainly isn’t a hand-picked opponent designed to protect a prospect.
This is a proper heavyweight test.
Being A Gatekeeper Is Not An Insult
People often throw around the word “gatekeeper” as though it’s some kind of criticism.
I don’t see it that way.
In fact, some of the most respected fighters in boxing have spent the latter stages of their careers in that role.
A gatekeeper isn’t somebody who is useless.
A gatekeeper is somebody good enough to expose fighters who aren’t ready.
And I think that’s exactly where Filip Hrgovic finds himself.
He’s good enough to beat young heavyweights who arrive too soon.
Good enough to punish mistakes.
Good enough to ask questions.
Trust me, that’s not an insult.
If anything, it tells you just how dangerous he still is.
This Is The Fight That Could Tell Us Everything
At some point every great heavyweight has to answer difficult questions.
Can they handle pressure?
Can they stay calm when things go wrong?
Can they win when they don’t get their own way?
Nobody knows those answers about Moses Itauma yet because nobody has really forced him to show them.
Filip Hrgovic might.
And if he does, that’s exactly what we should want.
Because young fighters don’t become world champions by knocking everybody out in a round.
They become world champions by overcoming difficult nights.
A Win Changes The Conversation
If Moses Itauma beats Filip Hrgovic convincingly, the conversation changes immediately.
We’re no longer talking about potential.
We’re no longer talking about hype.
We’re talking about world titles.
Suddenly, those calls for eliminators and championship opportunities become much harder to ignore.
Not because Hrgovic is the biggest scalp available.
But because he’ll represent something far more important.
Proof.
The Perfect Fight At The Perfect Time
I honestly think this is excellent matchmaking.
Dillian Whyte was supposed to provide the answers, but Moses Itauma got rid of him in 119 seconds and left us wanting more.
Filip Hrgovic feels like the test everyone hoped Whyte would be.
He’s big enough.
He’s experienced enough.
And while he may no longer be at his peak, he’s still more than capable of applying pressure and forcing Itauma to work.
That’s why I think this could be the perfect fight at the perfect time.
Because if Moses Itauma really is the future heavyweight champion so many believe he can become, then Filip Hrgovic is exactly the sort of opponent he should beat.
Not necessarily easily.
But convincingly.
And if he does, the road to a world title suddenly becomes a lot shorter.
What Do You Think?
Is Filip Hrgovic the perfect next opponent for Moses Itauma, or do you think the young heavyweight should have taken another route?
