Fight Night Review 4th November 2017

fight night, review

On Saturday night Monaco treated us to a packed night of world championship action. Here’s my fight night review of all the action.

Dmitry Bivol V Trent Broadhurst

Dmitry Bivol retains his title with a stunning one punch knockout in the first round.

The 1st was tight and close both men looking to be on the front foot, then out of nowhere Broadhurst hit the canvas it looked like a slip but the referee counted it as a knockdown. Then on the bell Bivol landed a perfect right hand which laid Broadhurst out, and the referee had no choice but to stop the fight.

Jamie McDonnell V Liborio Solis

Jamie McDonnell retained his title on a technical draw after the doctor stopped the fight in the 3rd.

In the 1st round McDonnell came out looking to be on the front foot and working well off the jab. McDonnell needs to keep the fight at distance because when Solis gets inside that’s when he’s doing most of his damage. It was a tight round with both men having success, but I think Solis may have edged it. In the 2nd round Solis came out letting his hands go. It was another close round but the better quality punches were coming from Solis. Toward the end of the round McDonnell landed some nice shots. At the start of the 3rd McDonnell was cut badly from a clash of heads. In the round Solis was staying on the front foot it looked like Solis was looking for the stoppage. However McDonnell didn’t give up, and the punches started to flow from both men. I think this was because of the cut to McDonnell both men are worried about the doctor stopping it. As we know if a fight is stopped before 4 rounds are completed it’s a technical draw. The doctor did stop the fight which is a shame cause it was shaping up to be a good one I had it one round each on my card.

Scott Quigg V Oleg Yefimovich

Scott Quigg moved one step closer to once again becoming a world champion with a 6th round stoppage, but it wasn’t a vintage performance.

The 1st was very much a feeling out round both men just trying to find there range. However Quigg does seem to be getting caught often, but he is that kind of fighter he’s quite happy to take 1 to give 1. In the 2nd round it still looked like Quigg was trying to find his range but he’s getting caught on the counter. I can see he’s trying to make a statement and walk through his opponent but he should go back to his boxing skills. Toward the end of the round Quigg did start landing some body shots that seem to slow Yefimovich down. In the 3rd round it finally looks like Quigg has gone back to his skills, midd way through the round Quigg rocked Yefimovich and he went looking for the finish. He continued to land good shots to the head and body and Yefimovich’s punches don’t seem to have any snap in them. In the 4th Yefimovich landed some nice shots, but then Quigg went back to the body. Quigg needs to stop trying to walk through Yefimovich because if he fights like this as he moves up he will come up short. Midd way through the round he rocked Yefimovich again and he looked ready to go. In the 5th round Quigg continued to land big shots surely it’s only a a matter of time, but he’s still getting caught far to often.

Going into the second half of the fight Quigg had won every round but it’s not a good boxing performance. At the start of the 6th Yefimovich continued to take punishment and the referee said enough was enough and stopped the fight.

Agit Kabayel V Dereck Chisora

Agit Kabayel put on a boxing master class to win by a controversial split decision.

In the 1st Kabayel looked to go to the body from the start, better quality punches were coming from Kabayel. However Chisora was doing a good job of cutting off the ring and putting Kabayel on his back foot. In the 2nd Chisora came out looking to throw shots but he was smothering his work. Then Kabayel started to take over landing shots of his own. Kabayel seems to have found his rhythm could this spell trouble for Chisora as the fight goes on. In the 3rd round Chisora landed some nice shots but still the better work was coming from Kabayel. Toward the end of the round Chisora landed some big shots. In the 4th Kabayel was landing some nice shots to the head and body . Chisora seems to have switched off a bit in this round. In the 5th round Kabayel continued to box well, Chisora was struggling to get his own shots off and when he did he missed.

Going into the second half of the fight I had Kabayel 4 up Chisora needs a big second half. In the 6th round Chisora was trying to get his shots off but he was reaching with his punches or was just tying Kabayel up. Kabayel just continued to stick to the game plan. In the 7th Chisora was starting to look tired and disinterested, it looks like he’s already out of ideas. In the 8th it was starting to look like a sparring session for Kabayel and Chisora just looks like he doesn’t want to be there. The only way Chisora could win now would be by a knockout because he’s got to be well behind on the cards. At the start of the 9th Chisora looked like he’d stepped on the gas but he’s just not landing and Kabayel is just picking him off. The 10th was much the same as the rest of the fight, with Kabayel picking Chisora off and Chisora was just reaching with his shots, and he was walking into shots. In the 11th it looked like Kabayel is just looking to see the fight out, but to be fair Chisora is trying to up the pace but he can’t seem to make a dent in Kabayel.

Going into the final round I had it very wide to Kabayel. In the 12th it looked like Chisora was going for it, but Kabayel was just out boxing Chisora. On my card Chisora won the round but it’s too little too late

Also on the bill:

Harlem Eubank: Moved to 3-0 with a points win.
