On Saturday night Del Boy Dereck Chisora took on the European champion Agit Kabayel, and he came up short. I know the judges had it quite close, but I saw the fight completely different. Following this loss you have to ask is this the end for Dereck Chisora?
In the build up to this fight he looked in very good shape and up for the challenge, but on fight night he started the fight well but then it turned into a typical Chisora performance he was just walking forward and getting caught on the way in, and Kabayel was just able to pick him off. Kabayel was getting the better of most of the exchanges. Toward the end of the fight he did start boxing well but it was too little too late. I only gave him one round on my card and that was been kind.
However in his post fight interview you can clearly see he thought he won the fight:
Although he lost on Saturday he still has a number of options open to him:
- Retire: I know that on Saturday night he said he would be back, but who’s going to want to fight him. If he does retire there would be no shame in it he’s achieved a lot in his career, the only level he hasn’t had success in is at world level. We know he’s got a lot of business interests outside of boxing maybe it’s time he concentrated on them.
- Rematch with Dillian Whyte: I’m sure we all remember the great fight of the year candidate the pair gave us last year. Ever since then people have been talking about the rematch, and I can still see it happening at some point because the public still want it. The only problem I can see is does Whyte what the rematch, at the time of their first fight they both needed each other but now Whyte has a world title in his future will he see the rematch as a step backward.
- Challenge for the British Title: He’s still a very good boxer when he turns up so maybe stepping down a level will give his career a new lease of life. I think a fight between him and Sam Sexton would be a really good fight, because I think their styles will gel well and it’s a win, win fight for both fighters. As Chisora would be a big name on Sexton’s record and if Chisora was to win it would move him straight back up the rankings.
- Become a gatekeeper fighter: a gatekeeper is very similar to a journeyman but if you beat a gatekeeper it moves you up the rankings often into a title shot. However if he gets a few good wins he could soon go from a gatekeeper into a title shot of his own
If he does decide to continue with his boxing career he needs to make sure it’s what he really wants, because at times he has a tendency to switch off in fights and look disinterested, when he fights the way he can, he can still give any heavyweight at domestic level a good fight and run for their money. However if he’s not going to dedicate himself to the sport maybe it is time for him to hang up the gloves.
I’m sure more news will come out in the coming weeks and months, but please comment below and let me know what you think he should do
Hi Chris I think he would be better off if he left gracefully his had a good life as boxer time to move on and don’t think his got another fight left in him?
