Who’s Next for AJ?

As we all know, boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has promised news on Anthony Joshua’s next opponent sometime next week — but who will it be?

The smart money has narrowed it down to two names: Wladimir Klitschko or Joseph Parker. In this post, I’ll look at the pros and cons of both matchups.

The Case for Klitschko

Firstly, the Klitschko fight. I can fully understand the reasoning behind making this one. There’s no question it would be a massive event worldwide — big money, big name. It would likely attract attention even from casual fans, as Klitschko is a household name.

From that angle, it’s a no-brainer. But is it the best choice for Joshua?

To me, it feels like a case of everything to lose and very little to gain. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a fight I’d love to see — but it’s a big risk.

If Joshua wins in typical AJ fashion, critics will say he beat an older man past his prime. But if he loses? People will say it was too soon — a step too far.

The Case for Parker

If Joshua takes on Joseph Parker, the mainstream buzz might not be quite as loud — Parker isn’t a name many casual fans will know.

But for the hardcore fight crowd, it could be a brilliant contest. Both are undefeated, both are young, and neither has yet reached their prime. It would be a proper test, and perhaps a more important one for the future of the heavyweight division.

Not to mention, Parker is currently ranked number one by the IBF — so it would be a meaningful, strategic fight.

What Will AJ Do?

Whoever Anthony Joshua’s next opponent is, it’s bound to be a big night. His team will pick the option they believe is best for him and his long-term career.

Rumour has it we’ll see him back in the ring in December. But whether it’s experience versus youth with Klitschko, or two rising stars colliding with Parker, fans have reason to be excited.
