This weekend Rocky Fielding steps into the lions den when he travels over to Germany to take on WBA king Tyrone Zeuge for the Super Middleweight world title. So with that in mind I thought I’d look at who is Rocky Fielding as nobody but hardcore boxing fans seems to know who he is.
As an amateur he reached the ABA finals in 2007 and 2008 he was undefeated until he took on Chris Cook who knocked him out in the opening round.
Rocky turned professional in 2010 and made his professional debut on the 25th September beating James Tucker a fight he won on points over 6 rounds. He went on to win his first 3 fights on points. Then on the 23rd March 2011 he burst onto the British boxing scene, when he dropped down a weight to enter the Prizefighter tournament as a Super Middleweight. Not only did he win the tournament he became the first man ever to knockout all of his 3 opponents along the way.
After winning Prizefighter his profile began to rise in the boxing world and he went on a 5 fight winning streak, before he got the chance to fight for his first professional title when on the 6th October 2012 he took on Carl Dilks for the vacant English title he won the fight in style with a 5th round knockout, he would make just the one successful defence before vacating the title. Just two fights later he was back fighting for a title as he stepped into the ring with Mohammed Akrong for the vacant Commonwealth title again Rocky made a statement knocking out Akrong in the opening round. In his first defence of his title disaster struck when he weighed in a massive 7 pounds overweight, as a result he was stripped of the title before a punch was even thrown. So although he won the fight by unanimous decision 120-108 on all three of the judges cards he wasn’t credited with defending his title.
After the controversy following him missing the weight for his Commonwealth title defence he was back in the ring that summer taking one step closer to becoming a world champion when he took on Noe Gonzalez Alcoba for the WBA Inter Continental title, again he put in an impressive performance scoring the knockout in the 5th round. He also picked up the WBC International title along the way, so at this point in his career everything looked all set up for him to get a shot at the world title but there was one more hurdle he had to overcome first and that was the fight with his Merseyside rival Callum Smith. Many thought this was going to be a close fight that would go the distance but what happened on fight night was something completely different, Smith wiped him out inside a round.
After such a devastating loss many fighters would take an easier fight for their first fight back but not Rocky he was back in the ring just 5 months later against the very tough Christopher Rebrasse. He put in an impressive performance to win a close split decision 114-113, 113-115 and 114-113 to win the WBC International title and prove to himself and the world that the loss to Callum Smith was just a bad night at the office.
2017 was a very successful year for him as he won the British title with a split decision victory over John Ryder 114-115,116-113 and 115-114 on the judges cards. Then he went on to reclaim the Commonwealth title with a first round knockout victory over David Brophy.
So now after 8 years of fighting as a professional the stage is set for him to rule the world the only question now is can he do it? Well we will have to wait till Saturday to find out I believe he’s got all the tools he needs to become a world champion but British fighters have not got the best record when fighting in Germany.
I hope this post has helped you to understand who Rocky Fielding is and how he’s fought his way to this shot at the world title. I will be doing a fight night preview and review so check that out. As always I love to hear from you guys so comment below and let me know your thoughts.
