On Saturday night Kell Brook looked to get his career back on track when he took on Errol Spence at the home of his beloved Sheffield United. Unfortunately he was stopped in the 11th round after been put down in the 10th, this has led to a number of people to ask what next For Kell Brook?
He started the fight really well but thing started to go wrong in the 7th round he continued to try and fight back but it was obvious something wasn’t wright he was sent to the canvas in the 10th and bravely beat the count and continued to fightback. He then took a knee in the 11th and he couldn’t beat the count. In his post fight interview in the ring this is what he said:
Many people on Saturday night thought that he had just given up in the fight or just had the fight beaten out of him. However that may not have been the case it was confirmed on Sunday morning via social media, that he had broken his left eye socket. So he couldn’t see Spence’s punches coming which is why he went down again in the 11th round.
It looks like he has suffered a similar injury to the one he suffered in the Golovkin fight, so he could be looking at a long layoff, but if he does comeback were does he go next. In his post fight interview Eddie Hearn was asked about Kell’s future and this is what he said:
The way I see it he has three main options:
• Retire: I can’t see him doing this as he is only 29 and he still has a lot to offer the sport of boxing. However this is the second time his suffered this type of injury admittedly on different eyes but you have to wonder if he’s worried about his eye sight long term.
• Stay at Welterweight: He may decide to stay at Welterweight if he does he may chase a rematch with Errol Spence which would be a good fight. If he does get a rematch with Spence it maybe a good idea to have it away from Sheffield, it may even be a good idea for him to travel to the US. That way there will be no extra pressure on him from the crowd and the media he only has to concentrate on the fight.
• Move up to Light Middleweight: Many people including his own promoter believe this to be his best move going forward. This could be because he’s struggled to make 147lb for the past few years, maybe a move up to 154lb would do him good. If he does move up it may set up the fight the world wants to see a fight with Amir Khan in an all British clash. Now don’t get me wrong this was a fight I would have loved to of seen 3 or 4 years ago when both men where at their best. If it happens now I think it will be like Mayweather Pacquio all hype. I can see other problems with him moving up the weight might suit him but is he going to have the punch power at the higher weight. My biggest concern is, is he going to have the punch resistance at Light Middleweight. We saw on Saturday that he was rocked a few times before he broke his eye socket, so is he going to be able to cope with heavier and harder punches.
No doubt all these questions will be answered over the coming weeks and months so watch this space. Comment below and let me know what you think.
