On Saturday night Callum Smith took on Artur Beterbiev for the unified Light Heavyweight championship of the world. Unfortunately for all British boxing fans he was outclassed with his corner stopping the fight in the 7th round after he had been put down twice in the round.
Now the biggest question on everyone’s lips is what’s next for Callum Smith? This is what I am going to be looking at in this post.
For those of you who miss the fight here’s what happened:
As you can see Callum Smith was clearly our classed I think in the whole fight he had one or two good rounds you can see what he was trying to do, but to me he looked like he was headshot happy where he needed to go to the body more, don’t get me wrong, he was trying to go to the body you can see that, but he needed to throw combinations to the body and punches in bunches not just behind single shots and then go back upstairs. Yes I know it’s easy to analyse the fight when it’s all over and you can say you should have done this or you should have done that on Saturday Callum Smith looked out of his league.
What’s next for Callum Smith?
This might be a controversial thing to say, but the way I see it, he’s got three options.
1. Retire
Option number one is that he could retire there’s no shame in that decision. He’s had a great career never backing down from a challenge, and always taking on the best. He said himself that he’s not the best anymore which is got to be a hard thing for any boxer to admit.
2. One last hurrah
Option number two again this is just my opinion he could have one last fight in his hometown of Liverpool. The problem with this is that we have seen it too many times where a fighter decides to have one more fight, but then they announced their retirement before the fight notable examples of this is Anthony, Corolla and Scott Quigg, both brilliant fighters in the day, but then they decided to have one more fight, and you could just see that there heart isn’t in it anymore and there bodies couldn’t do what they used to be able to do, and that would be my worry if Callum decided to take this option. Due to the fact that the fight will get the big billing and a lot of fanfare, and more often than not, the fight, never lives up to the hype, and it can sometimes damage a fighter’s legacy and reputation.
3.World title shot
The third option and in my opinion, the least likely to happen at least not straight away is to try and get another shot at the title as despite his loss on Saturday he’s still ranked in the top three of all the governing bodies so he could quite easily get another shot at the title, the problem I can see with this is that Artur Beterbiev holds three of the four world title belts, and I can’t see him wanting to give Callum Smith a rematch. Nor can I see Callum wanting to take it not after the devastating stoppage. He suffered on Saturday night, so the viable option could be to go after the IBO title which is currently held by the unbeaten Russian Dmitrii Bivol and to be brutally honest, I can’t see him wanting to give Smith a shot anytime soon.
We will have to wait and see what happens in the next coming weeks and months, but given the fact that he’s 34 in April, as much as he might want to continue. He strikes me as the sort of fighter that if he can’t fight at the top level he will hang up the gloves.
As always I love to hear what you guys think what should Callum Smith do next please leave your thoughts in the comments
