What Does The Future Hold For Hughie Fury?

Hughie Fury

On Saturday night Hughie Fury was in the ring again after a long lay off with injuries and health problems after suffering his first defeat as a professional. Despite all that he came back in style knocking out Sam Sexton in the 5th round to become the new British Heavyweight champion. So now people want to know who’s next and were is he going to go from here? So in this post I will look at some possible options for him.

Although it was an impressive performance from him on Saturday it came as no surprise with no disrespect to Sam Sexton Fury is definitely a level above him. However you could clearly see the improvements he has made since the loss to Parker he was coming forward a lot more been more aggressive and he seemed to have a lot more spite in his punches.

In his post fight interview he was asked where he would like to go from here and he was quite disrespectful about the British title calling it a stepping stone and saying that he’s ready to move back into the world title mix. Ok most fighters use the British title to propel their careers on to bigger and better things. Nevertheless it is one of the oldest and most well respected belts not just in British boxing but in boxing in general it has been held by some of the biggest names in the sport.

I can understand him wanting to move his career on especially with how hot the heavyweight devision is at the moment but I don’t understand the big rush he’s only 23 he’s just come back from a loss all be it a controversial one. Now he needs to rebuild and reestablish himself back at the top level of the heavyweight devision. The best way to do that and prove some doubters wrong is to work his way back through the levels of the sport, so here’s what I think he should do:

  • Defend The British Title: There are a number of good fights out there at British title level I think a fight with someone like Dereck Chisora, David Price or David Allen would be a good fight for him. If he defends it 5 times successfully then he would win it forever.
  • Fight For The Commonwealth Title: If he does want to move on from the British title then maybe a fight with the newly crowned Commonwealth champion Joe Joyce would be a good fight for both men, and I think it’s a fight that the fans would enjoy. Also if he didn’t want to vacate the British title it could be made as a unification fight for both titles. It’s definitely a fight I would like to see.
  • Fight For The European Title: I think this could be a really exciting fight to watch as Agit Kabayel is a come forward fighter who’s not scared to take a shot. I think their styles will gel well which should make it an enjoyable and interesting fight.

I think he is young enough to achieve all this before he fights for a world title again and by doing it this way he will have experience of been in big fights before going for the biggest one of all. The problem he’s got now is that he was criticised by a number of people in the boxing world for not taking this route to a world title in the first place, so now he’s dammed if he does and dammed if he doesn’t. If he now takes the so called traditional route to a world title people will say that he obviously doesn’t think he can win a world title yet. However if he goes straight into a world title or a title eliminator fight and loses again then that could be the end of his career before it’s really got chance to get started.

These are just a few options that I think could help develop both him as a fighter and his career going forward. As always I love to hear what you guys think so comment below and let me know your thoughts.
