On Saturday night Isaac Chamberlain took on Lawrence Okolie in a much anticipated all British fight. However it didn’t go to plan as Okolie out boxed him for 12 quite boring rounds. So in this post I will be looking at where it all went wrong for him?
Right from the start on Saturday Chamberlain just didn’t look right, during his walk to the ring he just looked tight and nervous. From the opening bell he just couldn’t get his boxing going and he made a number of mistakes which ended up with him getting caught with silly shots or been put on the canvas. If you watch the fight which you can do on my YouTube channel, you can see what his game plan was. To get through the early rounds in the hope that Okolie would tire going into the second half of the fight and down the stretch but that didn’t happen. He just didn’t have the size on Okolie to impose his will on him. Throughout the fight he kept looking down at his corner as if to say he didn’t agree with the game plan. It looked to me like his coaches had come up with the plan and he didn’t know how to execute it. At the final bell I had it very wide to Okolie 98 to 88 it would have been wider but Okolie had a point deducted in the final round.
Now he is only 23 so one loss at this stage of his career is not the end for him. There’s no question that he can rebuild and come again. The one problem I can see is that with this loss it might put him in the who needs him club so this might make it difficult for him to get a fight against a quality fighter. However he’s got a good promotional team around him and I can see a number of options he could take.
- Stay at Cruiserweight: Saturday could have just been a bad night at the office for him every fighter has them although they’d never admit it. One option for him could be to take a step down in opponent and fight Wadi Camacho for the Southern Area title.
- Move to Light Heavyweight: On Saturday he officially weighed 14 stone 1 pound 8 ounces, which means that before he could even think about fighting at this weight he would have to lose the best part of 2 stone which is a lot of weight to lose. I’m not saying he couldn’t do it I just think it would be a struggle for him, and if he’s got to lose that much weight there’s no way he’s going to be at his best come fight night.
At the moment he seems to be stuck as he is a small Cruiserweight and he doesn’t seem to have the punch power or indeed the physical size. However he’s too big to move down to Light Heavyweight. So were ever is future lies we will have to wait and see. One thing’s for sure no matter what he decides to do next I still believe he’s a quality boxer who can still win a world title.
