Last month Tyson Fury continued his comeback with a convincing win over Francesco Pianeta. With the WBC champion Deontay Wilder at ringside everyone is now talking about Fury taking on Wilder next. My question is, is two fights and 14 rounds good enough for Tyson Fury to earn a world title shot?
On the 18th August Fury stepped in the ring looking to continue his perfect start to his comeback, after he knocked out Sefer Seferi in the 4th round back in June and I think boxing fans were just looking to see more of a boxing match as the fight against Seferi was a bit of a farce. If that was the case then they were in luck as from the opening bell he got straight down to business landing at will on Pianeta. Winning the first four rounds with ease, from the fifth round onwards it looked like he was starting to go through the gears and although he was still been the showman you could see that he was fully focused on the fight. By about round 7 or 8 some of the crowd were starting to give him some stick with cries of “Come on Tyson” coming from some sections of the crowd. I think that’s because many of them had come expecting the early knockout instead of what they got which was a disciplined boxing performance.
As you can see from my scorecard I scored every round to Tyson and that wasn’t been generous he put on a boxing lesson for the whole fight. The only thing missing from his display was the knockout. However what you have to remember is that although Fury carries power he is not a one punch knockout artist. Although it was a very good boxing performance I think he should have gone for the knockout, but I think the reason he didn’t was because he hasn’t boxed a lot of competitive rounds in the last two and a half years and he was just concentrating on the win and not getting caught with a silly shot.
After the fight Fury’s promoter Frank Warren was asked how far off a fight was between Fury and Wilder and he simply said it’s on and this fight will happen, but he didn’t give any more details than that. He said that more details would be announce the following week, but as of yet no more details have been confirmed.
Although Fury is the lineal world heavyweight champion I still don’t think it’s fair for him to have 2 fights in 2 and a half years, which is a total of 14 rounds against opponents he was expected to beat and then walk straight into a title shot . If he does get the title shot surely that will make a mockery of the world rankings. I know in the past I have made no secret of the fact that I don’t like Tyson Fury as a person but I respect him as a fighter. So I am not just saying this because am talking about Fury.
I think the biggest obstacle to the Wilder fight happening is the fact that Fury has not yet got his license back to fight in New York or Las Vegas so he’s going to have to apply to get his license back and if it takes as long as it did for him to get his U.K license then I can’t see the fight happening.
I started this post by asking should a fighter who’s only fought 14 rounds in two and a half years get a shot at the world title in my opinion no they shouldn’t they should have to prove themselves and work their way back up the world rankings. It shouldn’t matter if they are a former world champion.
I think this is going to be one of those topics that rumbles on over the coming weeks and months, but as always I’d love to hear what you guys think so please comment below.
Great subject and totally agree with your assessment he should not be getting shot at any title let alone world title it total farce and not fair on a lot better fighters who have earned there shot cheers Chris.
