Should Makayla Mayer get a rematch?

Makayla Mayer get a rematch

On Saturday night we saw one of the best female boxing matches in recent memory between Natasha Jonas and Mikaela Mayer. It was a brilliant fight from first bell till last. Although it was probably one of the best female boxing matches of all time, a lot of boxing fans including myself are all asking the same question should Mikaela Mayer get a rematch?

The short answer to this question in my opinion is yes but in case you missed the fight on Saturday check out my Fight Night Review.

As you can see it was a great fight and I accept that it was a hard fight to score but I had Mayer winning the fight by 3 rounds, and I have watched the fight back a number of times although Jonas had landed some good shots throughout the fight I can’t make a case for her clearly winning the fight. I wasn’t surprised when the judges scored it a split decision because most of the rounds came down to what you like and as we all know judging a boxing match is subjective, it just seemed to me that throughout the fight Mayer was doing the better work.

Here’s what both women thought of the fight:

As you can see both women  thought it was a  close fight obviously both thought  they’d won  the fight, but as you can see Mikaela Mayer clearly thought she was robbed by the judges and to be fair I think she’s got a point, and  deep down in her heart of hearts Jonas knows that to.

Will the Rematch Happen?

I think the rematch will happen sooner rather than later purely because there are just too many unanswered questions left over from the fight on Saturday night I don’t think it will be either woman’s next fight but I do think it will happen before the end of the year.  One thing I am pretty sure about is that if and when the rematch does happen I think it will be in the UK again but I don’t think it will be in Liverpool. It wouldn’t surprise me if it was held in a neutral venue like Manchester, or London. if the fight was held in a neutral venue within the UK, yes, Jonas would have the home country advantage, but it wouldn’t’t’t be like Saturday night where it was like walking into the lion’s den, on top of this, this might prevent any hometown biased, There might have been on Saturday night. I’m not staying that the judges were influenced in anyway by the crowd, but it is a factor to consider when making the rematch.

What if the Rematch Doesn’t happen?

If the rematch between Natasha Jonas and Makayla Mayer doesn’t happen, I think Natasha Jonas will go after Jessica McCaskill to try and unify the division. To be honest that would be another fight that I would love to see.  As for Mayer the loss on Saturday will have done her reputation no harm at all if anything it might have enhanced it I don’t think she will have any trouble finding a fight. I think she might take one fight just to get her confidence back because although she put in a great performance on Saturday her confidence will have taken a knock, but with her position in the world rankings, even after the loss on Saturday, I can see her looking for her own fight with Jessica McCaskill and then possibly look for the rematch with Jonas to unify the division. In that case, she will probably look for the fight to happen in America.

This is just what I think, as always I love to know what you guys think Should Makayla Mayer get a rematch or did the judges get it right?
