On Saturday night Ricky Burns put in a great performance but unfortunately for him he came up short. It was a close fight but this loss has led some people to ask has Ricky Burns burnt out?
There is no question that the fight on Saturday was close and Ricky did make a bright start however throughout the fight Anthony Crolla did seem to be landing the better quality shots and he did seem to be the aggressor in the fight. I was in the arena on Saturday and I’ve have watched it back since and I had Crolla winning it by 2 on my card.
As you can see Burns obviously thought he won the fight and it seems like both fighters are keen for a rematch and based on Saturdays fight I think most boxing fans would love to see it again but will it happen is another question entirely. Due to the fact that with the win over Burns Crolla now has options going forward like a possible fight with fellow Brit Luke Campbell or he may even be able to get straight back into a world title fight although that seems unlikely.
So where does Ricky go from here, well Saturday’s loss was his second loss in his last two fight so unfortunately I only see two options for him:
- Retire: I know he’s said he’s got no intention of retiring but having suffered back to back defeats unless he gets the rematch with Crolla or drops down a level which at 34 I’m sure is something he doesn’t want to do I don’t know where he goes next. If he does decide to hang up the gloves he’s had a career that most fighters can only dream of he’s a multiple world champion and Scotland’s only 3 weight world champion.
- Rematch with Crolla: Given the fact that Saturday’s fight was so close and difficult to score I think a rematch does seem very likely at some point, especially when you take into account the reaction to the fight on social media. Shortly after the fight both Twitter and Facebook seemed to explode with people giving their opinions on the fight, many of which had Burns winning the fight. So it seems likely that the rematch if it happens will have to happen before either fighter can move forward.
I’m sure this is an issue that is going to rumble on for some time but I would love to know what you think so please comment below and let me know your thoughts.
