One World One Champion

world title One World One Champion

One question I get asked a lot is why is there so many different versions of the world title?  The easy answer to that question is because there are four world boxing governing bodies, the IBF, WBC, WBO and the WBA they all have their own version of the world title. This means that there are over 60 different world titles, and that’s not including the Ring magazine belt and all the different interim and silver championships. Now I don’t know about you but that seems a bit excessive!  Then of course there’s always the discussion about which world title is the best.

So Here’s an idea all the world title should be brought together into one world championship so that its one world one champion. So when a boxer says he’s the champion of the world he would be because there would only be one world title, for each weight devision.  Now I’m not saying I don’t enjoy a world title fight because I do as do all boxing fans around the world.  I’m saying that if there was only one world title the title would mean more because been a world champion is supposed to be the pinnacle of a boxer’s career, but under the current system with four championships per devision it doesn’t seem that way.

Now I know what you’re thinking by reducing the number of world titles it will reduce the number of title fights per year, and of course it will but when there is a world title fight  it will always be a special occasion.  It would also mean that we’d get more high profile fights because to become a world champion you would only get the best fighting the best.

I still think we should keep the interim   and sliver championship because the can still be used for a fighter to clime the world rankings, or for younger fighters to get a world ranking.

Now I know this is a controversial subject but I would love to know your thoughts so please comment below

  1. Sorry Chris completely have to disagree with you on this one, there are far too many good fighters out there to be contesting for one belt if you want 1
champion then let 1 off them unified all belts. Cheers billy

  2. Hi Billy i can see your point and I fully understand what your saying but have 1 world title per division works in other fighting sports just look at the UFC for one example. Thank you for your thoughts keep them coming.
