With less than 3 days to go before Mayweather and McGregor step into the ring together I still find myself asking why. Why is the fight happening at all? Why are they risking everything when there’s no title on the line? Why is the public so interested in this fight? In this post I will try and answer these questions.
Why Is The Fight Happening?
Well the first question is probably the easiest one to answer, although I’m sure both of them have their own reasons for wanting the fight I believe the biggest reason is money. As the pair are reportedly earning a $100 million from just the fight that’s not including the money they a bound to make from tickets, merchandise and pay-per view sales. Although the money split has not been officially confirmed it is believed that Floyd will be making most of the money as he is the biggest name. Let’s face it Conor versus any other boxer or UFC fighter for that matter would not attract this amount of interest.
Why Are They Risking Everything By Coming Out Of Retirement?
It is important to remember that Conor never officially retired from the UFC despite this Tweet that he posted in April.
He then reconciled his differences with the UFC and went on to beat Nate Diaz in their rematch and win the lightweight title by beating Eddie Alvarez a title that he still holds.
This is also not the first time that Floyd has comeback after announcing his retirement. If you remember he first called it a day ten years ago after beating Ricky Hatton. Then after almost two years out of the ring he came back to beat Juan Manuel Marquez this led him to relaunch his career and go on a 9 fight winning streak which included wins over Shane Mosley, and of course the boring win over Manny Pacquio. He retired for the second time after beating Andre Berto in September 2015
Then in January this year he said that he would come out of retirement for one more fight and only if it was Conor McGregor. Stating that he’s a business man and it makes sense. So in other words it makes money.
Why Fight If There’s nothing to win?
Ok I think we’ve already worked out why their fighting it’s for the money. However this is still the one thing about this fight that I don’t understand there’s nothing on the line so therefore there’s nothing to win. Ok both men are going to get a big payday probably one of the biggest in their careers but let’s take that out of the equation for one second. Surely this fight is going to do both men’s careers and reputations more harm than good because if Floyd wins people will say that Conor shouldn’t have been in a boxing ring. If Conor wins people will say that Floyd should of stayed retired as he had nothing left to prove.
Why Are The Public So Interested In This Fight?
If even half the hype on social media is to be believed this fight could be one of the biggest events in boxing or UFC history but why. I think it’s because a lot of people have just got caught up in the build up. It could also be because people love a good story and a good bit of theatre and so far at least this fight has had plenty of that. Another reason why the public are going loopy over this fight could be the fact that many people would love to see Floyd get beat and they believe that Conor is the man to do it. Well we will have to wait and see what happens on fight night. One thing’s for sure for better or worse this fight will go down in history.
