Yesterday evening, the biggest fight in recent boxing history between Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury for the undisputed heavyweight championship of the world was cancelled due to Tyson Fury, suffering a cut on his eye in training. I will be looking at whether the fight needed to be cancelled, or was it just an excuse for fury not to fight.
The news broke early evening on the 2nd of February that the biggest heavyweight fight in recent memory will be off due to Tyson Fury sustaining a cut on his eye. A spokesperson from Queensbury promotions Tyson Fury’s promotional company put out this statement on social media.

Although the cut does look severe, there are some people myself included that think it was used as an excuse for Fury to get out of fighting Usyk there has been a number of questions over his durability ever since his last fight that ended in a controversial split decision victory for him against UFC fighter Francis Nagnnou in October last year. I know that accidents in sparring happen and yes, it does look like a bad cut, but its two and a half weeks before the fight that should give it plenty of time to heal. Yes, it will probably open up again in the fight, but it probably would have opened up regardless. This is not the first time that Fury used a so-called injury to get out of a fight. To be honest, it seems to be something of a pattern if it’s a fight that he’s not favourite to win, he magically develops an injury or some of a reason to pull out of the fight.
I think it speaks volumes when other boxes, are even questioning the legitimacy of Fury’s injury, Speaking to Ifl TV David Haye, who himself had to pull out of a fight with Fury back in 2013 said this

Oleksandr Usyk’s Promotional team took to social media yesterday read the same statement that Tyson Fury made about David Hayes cut back in 2013. They don’t believe the cut is genuine.

To me there are two questions that remain unanswered , One we may never get the answer to it is a genuine cut or just an excuse not to fight and two will Oleksandr Usyk look for a new opponent for the original date that he was supposed to fight Fury because who knows when Fury is going to fight and be physically ready because let’s face it he’s gonna have to go through a whole new camp again, we will be lucky if it happens by the summer personally, I think we will be lucky if it happens this year, in which case, surely Fury needs to be stripped of his world title, as there are plenty of other fighters out there in the heavyweight division at the moment who are ready, willing and able to fight and give the belt and the division the respect it deserves
As always, I love to hear what you guys think, so let me know in the comments is it a genuine cut or just an excuse not to fight?
Only time will tell if we have seen the last of Tyson Fury, has he had enough will just have to wait and see. Great blog Chris 👌
