Fight Night Review 4th March

On Saturday night the O2 hosted a packed night of boxing, here’s my review of all the action.

David Haye V Tony Bellew

Tony Bellew shocks the world and knocks out David Haye in the 11th round.

Walking to the ring David Haye looked tight. Tony Bellew looked like a man who had something to prove but nothing to lose.

In the 1st round both men came out looking to throw shots, both men landed big shots there’s no way this one’s going all the way. More than once Bellew rocked Haye. In the 2nd both men came out looking to throw bombs. Hayes timing looked off and he was swinging and missing, if Bellew could time the right hand over the top Haye would fall. The 3rd started slowly it looked like both men were going back to their boxing skills. In the 4th round Haye still couldn’t land the big shot, however mid way through the round Haye did land some good shots but Bellew took them well. In the 5th both men continued to try and land the big shots but they were missing. I think Bellew needs to work off his jab and then land the big shots.

Going into the second half of the fight I had it a draw it was a much closer fight then I thought it would be, I thought it would be just a slugfest. Midway through the 6th Hayes ankle went and at the end of the round Haye hit the canvas. At the start of the 7th round Bellew came out throwing bombs looking for the stoppage. Haye could hardly stand this fight should be stopped. In the 8th Bellew continued to try and throw bombs. Haye was doing well just to stay in the fight, Haye just couldn’t land a shot. In the 9th Bellew looked like he’d punched himself out. In the 10th round both men had their success, Haye did well to stay in the fight. In the 11th Haye landed some shots. At the end of the round Bellew sent Haye through the ropes and Haye couldn’t beat the count. You have to give Haye huge credit for staying in the fight with an injury.

I would love to see a rematch but it depends how bad Haye’s injury is but this could be the end.

Ohara Davies V Derry Mathews

Ohara Davies puts in a punch perfect performance to destroy Derry Mathews in 3 rounds.

Walking to the ring Mathews looked confident. Davies looked focused and full of confidence.

In the 1st round Davies came out looking to land shots, it looks already that Mathews is struggling with Davies’ hand speed. At the start of the 2nd Davies came out trying to land combinations, in the early going it looks like Mathews has no answers to Davies’ speed and power. In the 3rd Mathews was still struggling to land anything of note, however everything Davies lands looks painful at the end of the round Mathews hits the canvas twice and the referee had no choice but to stop it.

Sam Eggington V Paulie Malignaggi

Sam Eggington puts in a career best performance to knockout Paulie Malignaggi in the 8th round

Walking to the ring Malignaggi looked very confident. Eggington walked to the ring like a man on a mission.

The 1st round was very much a feeling out round it was a close round but I think Eggington may have just edged it with the better quality shots. In the 2nd round Malignaggi did land some good shots but he couldn’t sustain the attack for the whole round. Toward the end of the round Eggington did start to land some good shots. In the 3rd round it looked like Malignaggi was trying to out work Eggington but Eggington just kept coming forward and landing shots. In the 4th round the better quality punches were coming from Eggington but the better boxing skill was coming from Malignaggi but can he keep it up for the whole fight? In the 5th Eggington landed some powerful looking punches but Malignaggi kept trying to come forward. Toward the end of the round it looked to me that Malignaggi was starting to run out of steam which is a bad sign.

Going into the second half of the fight I had Eggington up by 4. In the 6th Eggington started to land some good body shots. Towards the end of the round Malignaggi looked like the Malignaggi of old and rocked Eggington. At the start of the 7th round Malignaggi looked to pick up where he left off and he did land some good shots on Eggington. In the 8th it looked like Eggington tried to go back to his boxing skills and midd way through the round Malignaggi hit the canvas off a perfect body shot and he couldn’t beat the count.

Katie Taylor V Monica Gentili

Katie Taylor out classed an overmatched Monica Gentili to score a 5th round knockout.

Katie Taylor walked to the ring looking fit and ready to go. Monica Gentili walked to the ring looking focused.

Katie Taylor came out in the 1st round looking to throw shots, it already looks like Gentili  has no answers.  In the 2nd round Taylor came out landing some painful combinations, Gentili couldn’t  land anything to hurt Taylor.

Going into the second half of the fight Taylor has won everything the only thing missing is the stoppage. In the 4th Taylor picked up were she left off, how much more can Gentili take? In the 5th Taylor continued to land some painful shots. Mid way through the round the inevitable happened and Gentili hit the canvas and the referee stopped the fight.

Lee Selby V Andoni Gago

Lee Selby out classed a game Andoni Gago with a 9th round stoppage.

At the start of the fight Selby came out working behind his jab, mid way through the round Gago hit the canvas it looked like Gago had no answers. It looked like Selby was just looking to take his frustrations out on Gago. In the 2nd round Selby just continued to land quality and powerful shots. In the 3rd round Selby just kept teeing off on Gago, it looked more like a sparring session then a fight.  At the start of the 4th Gago did try and land some shots but Selby just slipped out of the way. Then normal service resumed.

Going into the second half of the fight I had Selby winning every round, it would be nice if Selby could get Gago out of there. In the 6th round it looked like Selby was starting to up his work rate to try and get Gago out of there. Toward the end of the round Selby rocked Gago but Gago made it to the bell. In the 7th Selby did start to load up on all his shots but you have to give Gago credit for still being in there trying to fight. In the 8th Selby just picked up where he left off, its been a great performance from Selby the only thing missing was the stoppage. At the start of the 9th round Selby unleashed another attack on Gago and the referee decided to stop the fight.

Ted Cheeseman V Jack Sellars

Ted Cheeseman wins a good fight on points.

In the 1st round both men came out trying to work off the jab. It was a fairly even round but Cheeseman just edged it. Toward the end of the round Cheeseman rocked Sellers. At the start of the 2nd Sellars hit the canvas but he bravely beat the count but it just looked like a matter of time. At the end of the round it looked like Sellars legs looked back under him and he was trying to work off the jab. At the start of the 3rd Sellars came out using his foot work to stay away from Cheeseman. However Cheeseman was still landing some quality shots and Sellars look ready to go, but he made it to the bell. In the 4th Cheeseman came out throwing shots. Sellars was trying to get back into the fight but he had nothing that could hurt Cheeseman

Going into the second half of the fight I had Cheeseman winning every round. In the 5th Sellars was still trying to get back in the fight, it was his best round of the fight. However the more powerful punches was coming from Cheeseman but it looked like he was getting frustrated. At the start of the 6th Cheeseman rocked Sellars again but you could really see Sellars growing in confidence. At the start of the 7th round both men came out looking to land shots, Sellars was starting to look tired, every time Cheeseman landed anything of note you could see his knees wobble.

Going into the final round the only way Sellars could win would be by knockout but still you have to give Sellars credit for hanging in there. This would be a fight I would love to see again. At the final bell I had Cheeseman winning by 7 rounds

Also on the bill:

David Allen won his second fight in a week over David Howe with a second round knockout.
