On Wednesday night The York Hall Bethnal Green hosted another NxtGen show. Here’s my fight night review of all the action.
Luke Watkins V Lawrence Okolie
Lawrence Okolie makes a statement wiping out Luke Watkins in the 3rd round to become the new Commonwealth champion.
In the 1st Okolie came out looking to let his hands go and make a statement. It looks like he could just land at will. In the 2nd Okolie just picked up were he left off landing a nice jab then a power shot. It looked like Watkins couldn’t get past Okolie’s long arms. Although Watkins does carry power he can’t get near Okolie to land one of his big shots. At the start of the 3rd Watkins was walking into a lot of shots. Then Watkins was rocked with a big left hook and he looked ready to go, and he continued to take shots until he hit the canvas he beat the count but he looks very wobbly. Seconds later Watkins hits the canvas again and the towel came in from the corner.
Reece Bellotti V Ryan Doyle
Ryan Doyle pulls off a huge upset stopping Reece Bellotti in the 5th round to become the new Commonwealth champion.
In the 1st round both men came out looking to let their hands go, this has been a very exciting opening round. In the 2nd Bellotti’s work seemed to be flowing well and Doyle still looked tight then toward the end of the round the punches started to fly. In the 3rd both men where looking to let their hands go with both men having their success. With a minute and a half to go in the round Doyle rocked Bellotti but he recovered, toward the end of the round Bellotti landed a big shot of his own which rocked Doyle. At the start of the 4th both men were looking to land big shots. Both men’s faces are showing the scars of battle. Bellotti looks like he’s feeling the pace but he’s still able to land good shots. Then Bellotti was rocked again he seemed to have forgotten some of his boxing skills he’s just trying to land bombs. At the start of the 5th Bellotti came out looking to land huge power shots. Then out of nowhere he is rocked with a big shot then another and he hits the canvas, and the referee stops it that is going to be very controversial.
Ted Cheeseman V Paul Upton
Ted Cheeseman puts in a punch perfect performance to stop the undefeated Paul Upton in the 4th round, to move to 14-0.
In the 1st round both men looked to work off the jab and let their hands go, this has been a very exciting start to the fight, I think Cheeseman might have just won the opener with better quality punches, and he’s able to walk through Upton’s punches. The 2nd started the same as the 1st Cheeseman was throwing quality hard shots. In the 3rd Cheeseman continued to land good shots to the body and the head. It seemed like whatever Upton does Cheeseman can just walk through it, Upton has to find a away in to this fight because Cheeseman can’t miss at the moment. In the 4th Cheeseman just continued to tee off you have to wonder how much more Upton can take. Then with over a minute and a half to go in the round Upton hits the canvas, he beat the count but he looks very unsteady on his feet. Now Cheeseman is going looking for the finish, then things went from bad to worse for Upton as he has a point taken off for holding. So if he makes it to the bell this round should be scored a 10-7. With 35 seconds to go in the round Upton touches down again but he won’t quit. With 10 seconds left till the bell Upton goes down again and the referee waved it off.
Also on the Bill:
Felix Cash: Put in an impressive boxing display to win on points and move to 9-0.
Daniyar Yeleussinov: Had to overcome a late change of opponent, but he still manages to look good and win on points over 6 rounds to move to 2-0.
Louie Lynn: Stops an overmatched opponent in the 2nd round to move to 2-0
Hope you enjoyed the fights please comment below and let me know your thoughts especially on the stoppage of Reece Bellotti.
