In the early hours of Sunday morning we moved across the pond to see part 2 of our big boxing weekend here’s my fight night review of all the action.
Deontay Wilder V Luis Ortiz
Deontay Wilder retains his title with a 10th round knockout but Luis Ortiz gave him all he could handle.
The 1st round started slowly both men just finding their range, there wasn’t much to split them but Ortiz may have just had the better of it. The 2nd also started slowly but then Wilder started to look for the right hand. This was not the start to the fight I was expecting Wilder seemed very wary of Ortiz’s power and hand speed. In the 3rd Wilder looked like he wanted to start landing shots however he was also happy to be patient and wait for the right shot. The crowd are starting to get restless but this is a good boxing match it’s a bit of a chess match but the fight will heat up the longer it goes. In the 4th Wilder needs to up the pace and make Ortiz feel uncomfortable, because at the moment Ortiz is winning this fight. In the 5th Ortiz was still landing good shots with very little coming back from Wilder. Then out of nowhere Wilder landed a number of hard shots and Ortiz couldn’t stand up to them as he hit the canvas, he beats the count and makes it to the bell.
Going into the second half of the fight I had Ortiz 4 rounds up. In the 6th Wilder began to have more and more success rocking Ortiz more than once. This is the type of fight I was expecting, I can see Wilder starting to take command of this fight. At the start of the 7th it looked like Wilder was happier to let his hands go a bit more but without been reckless. Ortiz was showing signs of tiredness but then Ortiz landed a big shot and Wilder looked ready to go. At the start of the 8th Wilder was all over the place can Ortiz make the most of it and take Wilder out. In the 9th Wilder’s legs were back under him, and he was back working off the jab, but Ortiz is still landing good shots. Toward the end of the round Wilder rocked Ortiz and he was saved by the bell. The 10th started slowly but then Wilder landed a big right which rocked Ortiz, Wilder continued to land shots and Ortiz hit the canvas somehow he beat the count but then seconds later he hit the canvas again and the referee waved it off.
Andre Dirrell V Jose Uzcategui
It’s revenge for Jose Uzcategui as Andre Dirrell quits at the end of the 8th.
In the 1st round both men wanted to be on the front foot and working off the jab, it was a close round but the better quality work was coming from Dirrell. In the 2nd Uzcategui looked to get off to a fast start landing a number of shots, in this round not much was coming back from Dirrell. At the start of the 3rd Dirrell was trowing out a number of jabs but nothing was landing clean, and midway through the round Uzcategui started to take over on the bell Dirrell was rocked with a body shot. At the start of the 4th Dirrell was trying to work off the jab but they were missing and Uzcategui looked too fast for him the quality shots were coming from Uzcategui and there seemed to be nothing Dirrell could do. In the 5th Uzcategui just picked up were he left off he was just able to land at will.
Going into the second half of the fight I had Uzcategui winning every round it seemed only a matter of time before Uzcategui gets the stoppage. In the 6th Uzcategui landed a number of hard shots to the body. Then he went back up to the head. Dirrel was trying to fight back but his shots were falling short. Toward the end of the round Dirrell did land some hard shots but not enough for him to win the round. The 7th started a bit slowly there was not much to split them but Uzcategui was making Dirrell work every minute of the round. In the 8th it looked like Uzcategui was trying to step it up landing a number of body and head shots and Dirrell looks unsteady on his feet and ready to go. Uzcategui continued to land big shots but somehow Dirrell is standing up to this. In the corner at the end of the round Dirrell looked like he’d had enough and his corner pulled him out.
I hope you enjoyed the fights comment below and let me know your thoughts, can Joshua beat Wilder?
