Fight Night Review 30th July 2016

fight night, review

On Saturday night The First Direct Arena in Leeds played host to a packed night of action here’s my review of all the action.

Josh Warrington v Patrick Hyland

Surely it’s Selby next for Warrington as he stops Hyland.

Hyland walked to the ring with a cold look on his face.  Warrington seemed to be loving the party atmosphere in the arena as he walked to the ring.  The 1st started slowly but by mid way through the round Warrington started to land his shots.  In the 2nd Warrington seemed to be growing in confidence, landing well to Hyland’s head and body, but Hyland was trying to back him up. In the 3rd Warrington was able to just tee off on Hyland the only thing that was missing was a bit more power. The 4th started quiet but then Warrington launched a big attack that rocked Hyland. The 5th was the same but Warrington seemed to be smothering his work.

Going into the second half of the fight I had Warrington winning everything because I couldn’t remember one punch that Hyland had landed. In the 6th round Warrington rocked Hyland again he just couldn’t put him over. In the 7th Warrington launched another big attack, but Hyland did well to turn the tables and get off his own shots. The 8th was the same Warrington was putting in a punch perfect performance and then he put Hyland on the canvas with one of his trademark body shots.  In the 9th Warrington put Hyland down twice, and 45 seconds into the round the referee waved it off.

Luke Campbell v Argenis Mendez

Luke Campbell looked solid with a unanimous decision win.

Walking to the ring Mendez seemed to have a confidence that you don’t often see in a fighter fighting away from home. Campbell also looked confident with the home crowd fully behind him. 1st round was very cagey both men just feeling each other out. The 2nd round started much the same as the 1st but then out of know were Mendez put Campbell on the canvas. The 3rd was the same as the first 2 Campbell didn’t seem able to let his hands go, and when he tried Mendez just tide him up. At the start of the 4th Campbell did start having some success and he continued to build on it throughout the round. Campbell had the better of the 5th but didn’t land anything of note.

Going into the second half of the fight I had it 1 round to Mendez but only because of the knockdown. In the 6th Campbell started to land more often, and Mendez was starting to look tired. In the 7th Campbell started landing more power shots with less and less coming back from Mendez.  In the 8th Campbell looked to start taking control of the fight with only the odd jab coming back from Mendez. In the 9th Campbell continue to dominate rocking Mendez at one point. The 10th was much the same Campbell was dominating but he couldn’t find that finishing shot. The 11th continue in the same way and the crowd was starting to get restless.  Going into the final round I had Campbell up by 2 and there seem to be nothing Mendez could do about it. The 12th was the same as the other rounds in the fight, this is not a fight I’d be in a rush to see again.

Dillian Whyte v David Allen

Whyte wins a boarding fight!!

Allen walk to the ring looking fit and up for it. Whyte walked to the ring full of confidents as he shuck hands with fans on his way to the ring. The 1st round was a bit scrappy with neither man landing much of anything. The 2nd was much the same but you could see both men were trying to tee off. In the 3rd both men were trying to land but it looked like nether could find there range. The 5th was much the same but Whyte did seem to be having the better of it.

This was a real hard fight to score because nether man was landing.  Throughout the fight it looked like both men were scared of the others power which was making for a poor fight. In the 6th Whyte did land some but they were few and far between. At the start of the 8th you could hear a pin drop in the arena the crowd just wanted to see some action. The opening bell for the 10th was greeted by boos and ironic cheers. That fight has to be one of the worst fights I have ever seen!!

Tyrone Nurse v Tommy Coyle

Disappointed from Tommy Coyle as he is robbed by the judges there needs to be a rematch!

Walking to the ring both men looked ready to go. In the 1st round both men came out on the  front  foot, but Coyle seem to be landing the better and more powerful punches.  At the start of the 2nd Coyle came out swinging and pinned Nurse on the ropes. Coyle rocked Nurse a number of times though out the round and more than once Nurse looked like he was ready to go.  In the 3rd Nurse had a better start to the round, but by mid way through the round Coyle had taken control again. At the start of the 4th Coyle once again pinned Nurse on the ropes, but Nurse fought   back to have his best round of the fight.  In the 5th was a much more even round with both men having success.

Going into the second half of the fight I had Coyle up by 4,but I could see Nurse slowly getting back into it.  In the 6th Nurse had his best round he seemed to be able to land a will but he couldn’t hurt Coyle.  The 7th was a close until Nurse hit the canvas. The 8th Coyle came out swinging looking for the finish but he was missing with a lot of punches. By mid way through the round Coyle has settled down and gone back to his boxing skills. In the 9th Coyle launched   some good looking attacks and Nurse was forced to clinch and hold Nurse ended the round on the ropes again. Nurse had a better start in the 10th but then Coyle had him pinned on the ropes and Nurse was taking more heavy shots.  The 11th was much the same it didn’t seem to matter what Nurse did.  Going into the 12th I had it very wide to Coyle the only way Nurse could have won would have been by knockout.

Also on a packed bill:

Ryan Burnett won a unanimous decision against Cesar Ramierez

Gamai Yafai won a unanimous decision to retain he’s commonwealth title

Sam Eggington and Frankie Gavin both won by knockout this should Set up an all Birmingham showdown between the two in October.
