Fight Night Review 30th July 2017

fight night, review

On Saturday night the Barclays centre played host to a packed night of action. Here’s my review of all the action.

Adrian Broner V Mikey Garcia

Mikey Garcia puts on a boxing master class to win a very wide unanimous decision

The 1st round was very much a feeling out round with not much to split them, it was a tight round but I think Garcia just edged it. The 2nd round was another close round but Garcia was just landing the better quality shots. In the 3rd round Broner was trying to work off the jab but they seemed to be falling short. Throughout the round the better punches were still coming from Garcia. The 4th round started slow, all of Broner shots were falling short. Toward the end of the round Garcia landed some good shots with Broner pinned on the ropes. In the 5th Broner continued to try and work off the jab and Garcia was just been patient and picking his shots. Whatever Broner tried Garcia had an answer.

Going into the second half of the fight I can’t give Broner a round Garcia is putting on a boxing master class. In the 6th round Broner continued to work off the jab but he doesn’t seem to be committing to his shots. Overall the 6th was a quiet round but Garcia still won the round. Broner needs to up the tempo and let his hands go. In the 7th the better punches were still coming from Garcia, and Broner is starting to look out of ideas. Toward the end of the round Garcia rocked Broner. The 8th round was much the same as the rest of the fight, and the crowd was getting on Broner’s back. It seems to me like Broner is scared to engage with Garcia. In the 9th round Garcia came out picking his shots and again Broner was throwing nothing back.

In to the championship rounds we go and I still can’t give Broner a round. The 10th went the same way as the rest of the fight. I can’t see how Broner is going to win this one he’s 9 rounds down on my card, and there’s no way he’s going to knock Garcia out. In the 11th round Garcia came out walking Broner down and just picking his shots.

Going into the final round Garcia had taken Broner to school and there’s no way he can win. In the 12th Garcia just continues to box the same way he’s boxed for the whole fight.

At the final bell I scored every round to Garcia and I don’t know where Broner goes from here

Jermall Charlo V Jorge Sebastian Heiland

Jermall Charlo scores a 4th round knockout over an injured Sebastian Heiland

Both men started the fight fast, both of them working well off the jab. Toward the end of the round it looked like Charlo was starting to take control. Heiland looks like he’s got a leg injury. In the 2nd round Charlo landed some very good shots. Mid way through the round Heiland tried to throw a shot and just fell over, the referee counted it as a knock down but if his leg is that bad he should have pulled out of the fight. Charlo could see that Heiland was injured and moved in for the kill. At the start of the 3rd Charlo picked up were he left off, but this fight is turning into a bit of a joke because Heiland can’t fight back because of the leg injury. Either the referee or corner needs to pull him out. The 4th was the same as the rest of the fight. I have to say I feel sorry for Charlo because he can’t show what he can really do because of Heiland’s injury. Midd way through the round Heiland hit the canvas off a nothing shot and the referee stopped the fight

Jarrell Miller V Gerald Washington

Jarrell Miller wore down Gerald Washington to score an 8th round stoppage.

In the 1st round both men were just feeling each other out, but Washington seems to have settled quicker working well off the jab and throwing some nice combinations. Miller was just walking forward with his hands up and not really throwing anything. In the 2nd round Miller started the round well throwing a number of power shots. Although Washington is clearly the better boxer of the two but if Miller can keep landing power shots it could be a long night for Washington. In the 3rd round Washington tried to use his boxing skills but he doesn’t have the power to keep Miller off him, and Miller was able to just keep walking Washington down. At the start of the 4th Miller rocked Washington and he looked ready to go, but somehow he survived. Toward the end of the round there seemed to be no snap in Washington’s punches to be honest it look like just a matter of time before Miller gets him out of there.

Going into the 2nd half of the fight I had Miller 3 up and there doesn’t seem to be a lot Washington can do about it. The 5th started slower but by midd way through the round Miller got Washington pinned on the ropes once again and started to tee off. At the start of the 6th Washington finally started to let his hands go, although they were good shots they didn’t seem to hurt Miller. Midd way through the round it was business as usual with Miller walking Washington down, and in the last few seconds Washington looked ready to go again. I think Washington’s corner should pull him out because there’s no way he’s going to win on points and he is just taking more and more punishment,as he hasn’t got the power to knockout Miller. In the 7th Miller just continue to tee off and Washington could do nothing about it. In the 8th Washington did his best to get back into the fight but he didn’t land anything that hurt Miller. At the end of the round the referee did the right thing and stopped the fight.

Also on the bill:

Katie Taylor made a statement on her US debut stopping her opponent in the 3rd round.
