Fight Night Review 25th February 2018

fight night, review

On Sunday night Manchester hosted a packed night of action here’s my fight night review of all the action.

Lewis Ritson V Joe Murray

Lewis Ritson retains his British title with a 1st round knockout.

In the 1st round both men came out looking to make a fast start, then out of know where Ritson hit Murray with a big body shot and he crumples to the canvas he beats the count but he looks very unsteady on his feet. Seconds later after taking a barrage of shots he hits the canvas again, once again he beats the count but surely he can’t take much more of this. The attack continued from Ritson and the referee had no choice but to stop the fight.

Jordan Gill V Jason Cunningham

Jordan Gill Puts in a career best performance to win by unanimous decision, but were does Jason Cunningham go from here.

The 1st round was very much a feeling out round with not much to split them, Cunningham may have just edged it. The 2nd was another close round the better shots did seem to be coming from Gill. In the 3rd Gill continued to have success it looked like Cunningham couldn’t cope with Gill’s hand speed. In the 4th Gill continued to land good shots with not much coming back from Cunningham. Then with 40 seconds to go in the round Gill landed a big right hand and Cunningham hit the canvas, he beat the count now Gill is going for the kill. Cunningham makes it to the bell but will a minute be enough for him to recover.

Going into the second half of the fight I had Gill 4 up because of the knockdown. In the 5th it looked like Gill was looking for the knockout there seems to be nothing coming back from Cunningham. In the 6th Gill continued to land quality painful looking shots. This is the first time Gill has been past the 6th round can he keep this up. In the 7th the better shots were coming from Gill, and again Cunningham hit the canvas but once again he beat the count. Now Gill’s looking to end it again Cunningham makes it to the end of the round. In the 8th Gill just stuck to his boxing landing the big shots when they came. In the 9th it looked like both men were happy to let their hands go both men looking for the knockout. Going into the final round I had it very wide to Gill I’ve only given Cunningham 1 round in the whole fight. In the final round Gill just continued to out box Cunningham but you could see that Cunningham was looking for the knockout. This is where you can see Gill’s lack of experience he just needs to stay away the final round was Cunningham’s best round.

Nathasha Jonas V Karina Kopinska

Nathasha Jonas Put in a punch perfect performance to win on points and maintained her undefeated record.

In the 1st Jonas came out moving well and working well off the jab, toward the end of the round she did land some good shots to the body. In the 2nd she continued to work well off the jab and just using her boxing skills well. In the 3rd Jonas came out landing good body shots she was also landing some nice combinations up stairs

Going into the second half of the fight Jonas has won every round. In the 4th Jonas continued to box well landing a number of one twos at this point in the fight it would be nice to see Jonas step it up and see if she can get the stoppage. At the start of the 5th Jonas did make Kopinska take a step back and then continued to land big body shots. Going into the final round Jonas has won every round. In the 6th Jonas picked up were she left off but she was putting more power in her punches.

Qais Asfaq V Brett Fidoe

Qais Asfaq gets off to the perfect start winning of points with a good performance.

Asfaq started well looking really bright mid way through the opener Asfaq landed some big shots. However his timing and foot work did look a bit off. In the 2nd he came out working well off the jab you could see that he wants to show everyone what he can do. In the 3rd Asfaq did start to land some big body shots, Asfaq was definitely looking for the knockout Fidoe didn’t seem to have the power to keep him off. In the final round Asfaq just picked up where he left off just boxing really well.

Hosea Burton V Josip Perkovic

Hosea Burton wins on points but it wasn’t his best performance.

In the 1st round Burton was looking to throw combinations and within the 1st minute he rocked Perkovic. However Perkovic came back with some nice counters. Burton needs to stop looking for the 1 big shot and stick to his boxing skills and the knockout will come. In the 2nd it looked like Burton had gone back to his boxing skills moving well and working well off the jab. However you could see that Perkovic hasn’t just come to make the numbers up. In the 3rd Perkovic came out looking to land shots and Burton was getting caught on the way in. Through the 1st 3 rounds Burton is looking a bit rusty. He needs to work on his defence and just work off the jab.

Going into the second half of the fight I had Burton 2 rounds up. In the 4th Burton was doing a good job of holding the centre of the ring but he needs to throw more set up shots. In the 5th Perkovic started the round looking to throw big shots of his own, this round is probably Perkovic’s best round of the fight. Although Burton is winning the fight it’s not his best performance. Again in the 6th Perkovic came out looking to land good shots midd way through the round Burton did start landing better quality shots to both the head and body. In the 7th Burton did box a lot better but he was just getting caught with shots. Toward the end of the round Burton landed some big body shots followed up by the jab. Going into the final round there’s no question Burton is winning but it’s not his best performance. In the 8th Burton continued to land nice shots to the body it looked like he was looking to close the show but Perkovic deserves to hear the final bell.
