Fight Night Review 25th February

David Price,World Championship
On Saturday night the Ice Arena in Hull played host to a packed night of boxing here’s my review of all the action.

Gavin McDonnell V Rey Vargas

Hart brake for Gavin McDonnell as he is out fought by a very good Rey Vargas. However I’m sure McDonnell will come again.

Rey Vargas walked to the ring looking very confident.  Gavin McDonnell walked to the ring with the  whole of Yorkshire behind him.

The 1st round was a feeling out round for both men, but Vargas did land some good body shots it looked like McDonnell just needed to relax and let the punches flow.  In the 2nd round McDonnell still looked tight but he did land some shots but Vargas still seems to be having the better of it. The 3rd round was still very cagey but both men had their successes but the quality punches where coming from Vargas.  In the 4th round McDonnell did try and land some good shots but they were falling short. Toward the end of the round McDonnell did land some good shots but I don’t think it was enough to take the round. In the 5th McDonnell started to lands some good body shots, it was probably his best round of the fight.

Going into the second half of the fight I had Vargas up by 4 but I could see McDonnell getting back into it.  In the 6th round although Vargas was still landing shots I could also see McDonnell growing in confidence.  In the 7th McDonnell did try and land shots but again the better and more powerful punches where coming from Vargas. The only way I can see McDonnell winning is for him to knock Vargas out and I can’t see that happening. In the 8th McDonnell looked to me that he was out of ideas and Vargas could do what he wanted when he wanted. McDonnell started the 9th well but then Vargas started to take control again it looked like he was picking off McDonnell at will.

Going into the championship rounds the only way McDonnell could win is to let his hands go and go for broke. In the 10th round McDonnell did land some painful looking shots but Vargas just kept coming forward. At the end of the round McDonnell did wobble Vargas.  In the 12th round  Vargas landed some good shots but there was no way McDonnell was going to give up and you have to give him credit for that.

Going into the final round a had it very wide to Vargas, but McDonnell has given it everything.  At the start of the 12th McDonnell came out swinging, but Vargas just danced  out  of the way.  At the bell I couldn’t make a case for McDonnell winning as I had it to Vargas by 5, but I’m sure Gavin McDonnell will come again.

Luke Campbell V Jairo Lopez

Luke Campbell wiped out Jairo Lopez within 2 rounds

Walking to the ring Jairo Lopez was greeted by a very hostile crowd. Luke Campbell walked to the ring looking ready to go.

In the 1st round Campbell Came out throwing shots and Lopez had no answer. More than once Lopez was rocked, and midway through the round Lopez hit the canvas Lopez made it back to his feet but the Campbell onslaught continued. The 2nd round started the same way as the 1st and Campbell landed a perfect upper cut and Lopez hit the canvas, Lopez got to his feet but the referee had to stop the fight.

Tommy Coyle V Rakeem Noble

Tommy Coyle destroyed an overmatched Rakeem Noble in 3 rounds.

Walking to the ring both men looked confident but the crowd was fully behind Tommy Coyle.

The 1st was very much a feeling out round, Noble started well working off the jab but the more powerful punches were coming from Coyle. However Noble was able to pick Coyle off.  In the 2nd round both men landed some good shots Coyle’s eye looked like it was starting to swell up and nearly shut. Toward the end of the round Coyle rocked Noble and he didn’t know where he was and it looked like the fight was going to be over, but Noble somehow made it to the bell. At the start of the 3rd the inevitable happen and Noble hit the canvas, he bravely got back to his feet but he had know idea were he was and the referee had no choice but to stop the fight.

Also on the bill:

Dec Spelman stopped Nathan King in the 3rd round in an all out war.

David Allen stopped Lukasz Rusiewicz in the 1st round

Ryan Burnett wins wide on points against a game Joseafat Rayes.
