Fight Night Review 22nd October 2016

fight night, review

On Saturday night the Barclaycard arena Birmingham hosted a big night of boxing here’s my review of all the action.

Sam Eggington V Frankie Gavin

Sam Eggington wins bragging rights with 8th round stoppage.

Eggington walked to the ring looking very focused. Gavin walked to the ring also looking focused the arena seem to be split on who they wanted to win.

The 1st round was very cagey there seem to be a mutual respect between the two. Towards the end of the round Eggington did land some good shots with Gavin on the ropes. In the 2nd both men seemed happy to let their hands go and the better quality punches were coming from Eggington but there wasn’t much in it. At the start of the 3rd Gavin hit the canvas off a well timed right hand, and for the rest of the round Eggington tried to get him out of there but he was smothering his work and getting caught with shots. At the start of the 4th it looked like Eggington had gone back to his boxing but now knowing he could hurt Gavin.  Gavin was throwing a lot but they were missing or been blocked. The 5th was just a good round of boxing with both men having success.

Going into the second half of the fight I had Eggington up by 2. Gavin looked like he was been out boxed. In the 6th Eggington could just tee off at will and Gavin had no answer, I think the fight should have been stopped. The 7th started well for Gavin but he didn’t have the power to hurt Eggington. Eggington could still tag Gavin whenever he wanted. The 8th started slower Gavin was trying to take control but his punches were missing. Eggington back Gavin into the ropes again and the referee had no choice but to stop the fight.

Craig Cunningham V Anthony Ogogo

Joy for Cunningham after an 8th round stoppage.

Cunningham walked to the ring looking focused with the whole arena behind him. Ogogo walked to the ring  looking very confident the crowd didn’t seem to bother him.

In the 1st round both men came out on the front foot looking to take the centre of the ring. It was a close round with Cunningham throwing but they were been blocked. The 2nd started the same it looked like Ogogo couldn’t find his range. Midway through the round Cunningham rocked Ogogo more then once, toward the end of the round Ogogo hit the canvas. The 3rd started slowly but Cunningham was still having the better of it a lot of Ogogo’s punches were falling short. Toward the end of the round Ogogo did land but Cunningham answered back, this was shaping up to be a good one.  At the start of the 4th Ogogo did land some good shots. It was probably his best round so far.

Going into the second half of the fight I had Cunningham up by 2 but I could see Ogogo getting back into it. At the start of the 5th Cunningham came out swinging but missing. He did shake Ogogo but only for a second, by the end of the round Ogogo was starting to land shots.  Ogogo came out at the start of the 6th looking to throw shots and he was having success. However he was still been rocked by Cunningham. Ogogo started fast again in the 7th but he still couldn’t land clean on Cunningham. In the 8th both men were starting to look tired and then out of nowhere Ogogo’s corner pulled him out with what looked like an eye injury.

Sean Davis V Paul Economides

Sean Davis wins a unanimous decision but what fight were the judges watching.

Economides walked to the ring looking confident. Davies looked like he was enjoying having the home crowd behind him.

In the 1st round both men came out on the front foot looking to throw shots Economides just had the better of it. The 2nd round started much the same, Davis was missing a lot and getting tagged on the way in.  The better shots were coming from Economides but Davis had the higher work rate.  The 3rd was another fairly even round with both men having success.  Davis had a good start to the 4th rocking Economides, it looked like he’d found his range. However Economides came back well landing some good shots of his own

Going into the second half of the fight it was tight but I had Economides 1 up. Economides had the better of the 5th landing some good shots.  The 6th was another close round but the better quality punches were still coming from Economides. In the 7th Economides was landing some good shots at will , and was pushing Davis on to the back foot. In the 8th Economides came out throwing shots and Davis seemed to have no answer, Davis looked like he didn’t have much left in the tank. The  9th was the same as much of the fight Davis seemed to have no answer to Economides punches. Going into the final round the only way Davis was going to win was by knockout, and that didn’t looked likely. By the final bell I had it by 4 to Economides.
