Fight Night Review 22nd April 2018

fight night, review

Ok fight fans it’s time for part two in this big weekend of boxing. In the early hours of Sunday morning The Barclay Centre hosted a packed night of action. Here’s my fight night review of all the action.

Adrien Broner V Jessie Vargas

After 12 hard rounds the judges score it a draw and that’s fair but I wouldn’t be in a rush to see it again.

In the 1st round both men came out looking to work off the jab, both men had their successes but it was very much a feeling out round. The 2nd round started much the same but Vargas seemed to be getting the better of the exchanges, Broner hasn’t really thrown anything of note. In the 3rd round Vargas picked up were he left off working off the jab then looking for the combination. Finally midway through the round Broner started to let his hands go, but still the better work is coming from Vargas. In the 4th round Broner was looking to take control landing a number of big shots. However Vargas came back well having success to the body. In the 5th round both men seemed happy to let their hands go, Vargas still seems to be landing the better quality shots. Although midway through the round Broner started to have a lot of success to the head.

Going into the second half of the fight I had Vargas 2 rounds up but it’s a close fight. At the start of the 6th round Broner started to land combinations if Vargas wants to have success in this fight he needs to go back to what he was doing at the start of the fight. In the 7th Vargas came out looking to work the body. Broner needs to stop throwing single shots and throw combinations. In the 8th round it started slowly and was starting to get a bit scrappy. Vargas is starting to let Broner into the fight because he’s not really doing anything he needs to get back behind his jab. In the 9th round Broner continued to work off the jab, and then Vargas came back with some good shots of his own. Then Broner came back again landing some big shots.

So into the championship rounds we go this could come down to who wants it more and although I’ve still got Vargas up Broner looks like he could come on strong. At the start of the 10th round Broner came out landing combinations, you can see in Vargas’s legs that he’s feeling the pace. In the 11th round it looked like Vargas was looking to go to the body but he needs to throw punches in bunches. With 30 seconds to go both men started landing shots.

Going into the final round I had Vargas 1 round up because it’s Vargas that’s been making the fight. In the 12th round Vargas seems to be landing the better quality shots. It’s clear Vargas thinks he’s won it because he was playing to the crowd I have to be honest the final round was boring and the crowd was booing.

At the final bell I had Vargas 2 up but you couldn’t argue with any result

Gervonta Davis V Jesus Cuellar

Gervonta Davis becomes the new WBA champion with a 3rd round knockout.

In the 1st round both men came out looking to be on the front foot, and working well off the jab it was a close round Davis may have just edged it with the better quality punches. In the 2nd round Davis continued to box well then looked to land the power shots. Middway through the round Davis landed a lovely left to the body and Cuellar hits the canvas, he beat the count but you can see that shot is still having an effect. Davis continued to go to the body looking for the finish but Cuellar makes it to the bell. At the start of the 3rd round Davis continued to go to the body. Davis is just teeing of on Cuellar. With less than a minute to go in the round Davis landed another big left to the body and Cuellar goes down again he beat the count again but now Davis is going looking for the finish. With less than 20 seconds to go in the round on the end of a big attack from Davis Cuellar goes down again and the referee has seen enough and stops the fight

Jermall Charlo V Hugo Centeno Jr

Jermall Charlo Scored a big 2nd round knockout this win could make him next in line to face Gennady Golovkin

The 1st started slowly both men just trying to find their range and distance, there was nothing to split them in the whole round. I’m sure the fight will catch fire as it goes on. In the 2nd Charlo was looking to be on the front foot he landed a number of big shots which rocked Centeno then landed a left hand, which laid Centeno out and there was no way he was going to get back up

Hope you enjoyed the fights comment below and let me know your thoughts.
