Fight Night Review 20th January 2024

fight night, review

On Saturday night the M&S bank Arena in Liverpool saw a trilling night of boxing, here’s my fight night review of all the action.

Aaron McKenna V Mickey Eilltson

Aaron McKenna Maintains his undefeated record with an impressive sixth round stoppage

The first round started cagey with both men just feeling each other out and then McKenna started to land some shots. Toward the end of the round Eilltson landed some good body shots and upper cuts.  McKenna was landing some good shots both to the head and body. Throughout the round Eilltson was coming forward, but he land anything of note.  In the third round Eilltson continued to come forward, but the better quality shots continue to come from McKenna and although Eilltson continued to come forward it was another round for McKenna. In the fourth round Eilltson did land some big shots but again the better shots where coming from McKenna and Eilltson is starting to look tired to me. In the fifth McKenna continue to work well off the jab he looked like he was starting to look for the stoppage with shots to the body.  In the whole round Eilltson only landed one good shot. At the end of the round Eilltson was shaking his hand, and his trainer warned him that if he doesn’t start fighting back his corner, would stop the fight. In the sixth round, McKenna continues to look for the stoppage and it looked like Eilltson was fighting one handed.   At the end of the round, the referee and Eilltson’s corner, thankfully stopped the fight.

Ste Clark V Vasif Mamedov

Ste Clark put in an impressive display on his professional debut to score something of a controversial third round stoppage.

In the first round Clark was on the front foot landing good shots looking like he wanted to make a statement on his professional debut. In the second round Clark continued to box well showing that he’s got good boxing fundamentals and a good boxing brain. If Clark could stop Mamedov from clinching and smothering his work a stoppage looks on the cards. In the third round Clark got the stoppage after Mamedov turned his back.

Karriss Artingstall V Ltla Furtado

Karriss Artingstall maintains her undefeated record with a hard fought point’s victory

The first round both women where just finding their range there was no real meaning for shots landed right at the end of the round Artingstall landed a big shot that put Furtado on the canvas. In the second round   Artingstall landed the better shots but Furtado recovered well from been knocked down. The third round both women started to let their hands go with Furtado having the better of it without really hurting Artingstall. In the fourth Furtado came out swinging if it wasn’t for the knock down I would say Furtado is winning the fight.  In the fifth round both women started to land good shots but again Furtado had the better of it. In the sixth round Artingstall controlled the round which is what she needed to do to stay in the fight.  In the seventh round Artingstall did well keeping the fight at her range and landing her shots. Into the final round we go, Artingstall continued to keep the fight at range, and it looked like she was looking for the stoppage.

At the final bell I had it to Artingstall by 2.

Jack Cullen v Zak Chelli

Zak Chelli wins a unanimous decision in a lacklustre rematch to win the British and commonwealth titles.

In the first round both men were just trying to find their rhythm and range, but you can see that as soon as the leather starts to fly this one will catch fire. The second round was another close round although Chelli did land a big shot that rocked Cullen. At the start of the third round Chelli started the brighter it looks as if Cullen can’t find his range, however at the end of the round Cullen did land some good shots. The fourth was another close round, this is a difficult fight to score but I would say that Chelli is getting the better of it but Cullen is starting to find his range and rhythm.  In the fifth both men started to have success but it’s still a hard round to score but for me it’s another round for Chelli.

So into the second half of the fight we go after the first half I have Chelli up by 3 but it’s a close fight. The sixth was another close round with the better work coming from Chelli, Cullen still looks very tight and he’s forcing his work.  The seventh followed the pattern of most of the fight close and hard to score. The eighth started very messy although throughout the round Chelli was landing the better shots but it was a very messy round.  The ninth was another close and messy round Cullen seems to be out of ideas and just throwing single shots. The tenth was yet again another close round with nether men landing anything clean. The eleventh round was another close and Scruffy round.

The bell rings for the twelfth and final round unfortunately nothing exciting happened Chelli just doing what he needed to do to win the round and the fight.

Natasha Jonas V Mikaela Mayer

Natasha Jonas retains her IBF world title with a thrilling split decision victory, but I hope there’s going to be a rematch.

In the first Jonas took the centre of the ring and looked to land her left hand, but nothing really landed clean.  In the second round both women started to land some shots with Mayer just getting the better of it. At the start of the third Jonas landed some really good body shots, but to her credit Mayer continued to come forward. This is shaping up to be a good fight. In the fourth both women had their success both women landing big shots. In the fifth both women where landing big shots and Mayer seems to be getting the better of the exchanges.

Going into the second half of the fight I had Mayer up by 1. In the sixth round Mayer rocked Jonas, but then Jonas landed good shots of her own but once again Mayer seemed to be getting the better of the exchanged. In the seventh both women continued to let the leather fly and Mayer is growing in confidence, but this is a very close fight.  In the eighth Mayer rocks Jonas again the way this fight is going Jonas is going to need a knock down to win the fight, but she is landing some excellent combinations.  At the start of the ninth both women landed good body shots and throughout the round, leather continues to fly.

Into the final round we go what a fight I’ve got Mayer 3 rounds up Jonas needs a knock down to win. In the tenth Mayer continued to walk Jonas down and takes the best Jonas had got.

I hope you all enjoyed a brilliant night of boxing action as always. I’d love to hear what you think, so feel free to leave a comment.
