On Saturday night Montecarlo played host to a packed night of world championship boxing here’s my review of all the action.
Luis Ortiz V Malik Scott
Luis Ortiz wins a very wide unanimous decision in one of the worst fights I have ever seen, both men should be ashamed of themselves.
Scott walked to the ring looking very calm. Ortiz walked to the ring looking focused.
The 1st round was very much a feeling out round with nether men throwing anything it look like Scott was scared of Ortiz and he was just running away. Midway through the 2nd Ortiz finally landed a shot but my god it’s not the most exciting fight. In the 3rd Ortiz started to land but nothing exciting happened it looked to me that Scott was just looking for a pay day. In the 4th the inevitable happened and Scott hit the canvas and it must have been the world slowest count, shortly after Scott hit the canvas again. At the start of the 5th Scott went down again this fight needs to be stopped.
Going into the second half of the fight I had Ortiz winning everything because Scott hasn’t thrown anything. The 6th was much the same as the rest of the fight and the crowd were starting to get restless it was just a bad fight. Out of nowhere at the start of the 7th Scott rocked Ortiz but then things went back to normal. At the end of the round Ortiz could land at will. How this fight made it to the 8th I have no idea I felt sorry for Ortiz because you can’t have a fight if you’re the only one who wants to fight. At the start of the 9th Scott hit the canvas yet again. In to the 10th we go the arena was quiet you could hear a pin drop.
Going into the 12th Ortiz won everything but the fight was terrible people are saying that Ortiz is the best heavyweight fighter out there but I can’t see how, if this guy takes on Joshua next year he will get destroyed.
Jamie McDonnell V Liberio Solis
Jamie McDonnell dug deep to retain his title with a controversial unanimous decision there has to be a rematch.
Solis walked to the ring looking very confident and up for the fight. McDonnell walked to the ring looking ready to go and focused.
In the 1st round both fighters came out looking to land their shots McDonnell was having the better of it. Solis was landing some really good shots at the end of the round, it was a very even round. At the start of the 2nd McDonnell was working well behind his jab, but the better punches were coming from Solis. By the end of the round McDonnell’s eye was marked up and there was blood coming from his nose. The 3rd started a bit slower but still the better punches were coming from Solis, McDonnell needs to put more spiked into his punches by the end of the round it looked like McDonnell was getting into it. Solis came out swinging at the start of the 4th it looked like McDonnell couldn’t cope with the hand speed of Solis. However again McDonnell came on strong at the end of the round. In the 5th Solis continued to land some good shots McDonnell looked like he didn’t have any answers to what Solis was doing.
Going into the second half of the fight I had Solis up by 3 and McDonnell has it all to do. In the 6th Solis work rate was still high and the better quality punches were coming from Solis. At one point it looked like Solis knew what McDonnell was going to do before he did it. The 7th was a better round for McDonnell as he was making Solis miss but he was still struggling to find his range. At the end of the round it looked like McDonnell’s nose had gone. In the 8th Solis continued to land some good shots, At one point Solis wobbled McDonnell and he looked ready to go. In the 9th McDonnell came out trying to land shots it was probably his best round of the fight. At the end of the round McDonnell rocked Solis big time and his legs looked gone. So into the championship rounds we go The 10th was a slower round and McDonnell was landing some good shots and Solis was starting to look tired. In the 11th McDonnell continued to land some really good shots and he looked in control of the fight but is it too little too late. McDonnell looked like he’d broke his right hand.
Going into the 12th I had Solis up by 2. The 12th was a good round for both men but I think Solis won it. So at the final bell I had Solis winning it by 3.
Jason Sosa V Stephen Smith
Jason Sosa out boxed a game Stephen Smith to retain his world title with a wide unanimous decision.
Stephen Smith walked in the ring looking very confident and up for it. Jason Sosa walked to the ring looking a bit tight but confident.
In the 1st both men came out on the front foot and looking to land shots. Smith was working very well behind his jab it was a very even round with not much to split them. At the start of the 2nd round disaster struck as Smith was put on the floor. However Smith came back well with shots to the head and body but Sosa was still having the better of it, at the end of the round Smith was rocked again. The 3rd started slower Smith was trying to be the aggressor but he was getting caught on the way in. Smith ended the round well but it was a Sosa round, on the bell Smith was caught with a right hand that opened up a bad looking cut. At the start of the 4th Sosa came out looking for the finish. Then out of nowhere Smith landed some good shots, but Smith couldn’t slow Sosa down. The 5th started slower Smith needed to go back to his boxing skills because he’s not going to out fight Sosa. At times it looked like Sosa could land at will.
Going into the second half of the fight I had Sosa up by 4 and Smith had it all to do. In the 6th Sosa was able to walk through Smith’s punches and land some quality punches. In the 7th Smith looked off balance and Sosa could just tee off. Smith did land some good body shots but they didn’t seem to be having much of an affect on Sosa. However Smith did start pushing Sosa back it was his best round of the fight. At the start of the 8th Sosa came out landing shots but Smith came back well rocking Sosa. However Smith is still fighting Sosa’s kind of fight but Smith was starting to get back in to it. In the 9th both men had success but Smith might have just edged it. At the end of the round Smith wobbled Sosa and he looked ready to go. In to the championship rounds we go at the start of the 10th Sosa looked to have recovered it was a quieter round both men looked like they are feeling the pace. At the start of the 11th Sosa came out throwing a nice combo it looked like Sosa could land at will.
Going into the 12th I had Sosa up by 5 the only way Smith could win would be a knockout. In the 12th both men looked out of steam, Smith gave everything he had in the final round.
At the final bell I had Sosa winning it by 6.
Also on the bill:
Martin Murray
Martin Murray kept his career going with a unanimous decision win. In a must win fight against a game opponent, this is a fight I’d love to see again when both fighters have had a full camp.
Great review did see the fight but reading this makes me feel I didn’t miss much keep up the good work all the best billy.
