Fight Night Review 10th June 2017

fight night, review

On Saturday night the SSE Arena in Belfast played host to a packed night of action. Here’s my review of all the action.

Lee Haskins V Ryan Burnett

Ryan Burnett puts on a boxing master class to win the world title in just his 17th fight.

Walking to the ring Ryan Burnett had the whole of Belfast behind him. Lee Haskins walked to the ring with a smile on his face ready to go

In the 1st round both men were just feeling each other out and trying to find there range, there wasn’t much in it but I think Burnett may have just edged it because he seemed to have found his range quicker. In the 2nd round Haskins came out looking to be on the front foot, but Burnett seemed able to walk Haskins down. Both men suffered cuts after a clash of heads. Burnett just seemed to be landing the better punches. At the start of the 3rd it looked like Haskins was reaching in with his punches, more than once Burnett didn’t rock Haskins but made him take a step back. It looked to me like Haskins might be struggling with the pace of the fight. In the 4th Burnett continued to land some good shots, and it looked like Haskins had nothing that could hurt Burnett, however it’s still early in the fight. Towards the end of the round Haskins did land some nice body shots. The 5th started off a bit scrappy, but midd way through the round both men had success but the better work was still coming from Burnett.

Going into the 2nd half of the fight I had Burnett 3 up and boxing really well. In the 6th it still looked like Haskins was struggling to find the target and he was falling into Burnett. With less than a minute to go in the round Burnett put Haskins on the canvas with a good shot, Haskins bravely beat the count but he seems to have a problem. Toward the end of the round Burnett went in for the kill. Haskins somehow made it to the bell. Going into the 7th Haskins looked like he’d lost the ability to throw the jab, and it looked like Burnett could land at will. I think if Haskins is injured his corner should pull him out as he is well behind on the cards. In the 8th it looked like Haskins was just looking for that one big shot, and Burnett just continued to stick to his game plan and box. In the 9th Burnett continued to pick Haskins off, but you have to give Haskins credit he wouldn’t give up even with an obvious injury. At the start of the 10th Burnett continued to land painful looking shots, toward the end of the round Burnett rocked Haskins but he recovered well. The 11th round started slow I think both men were feeling it. It definitely looked like Haskins had nothing left. With 30 seconds to go in the round the inevitable happened and Haskins hit the canvas again off a right hand, again he beat the count and made it to the bell.

Going into the final round I had it very wide to Burnett and I can’t even make a case for Haskins. In the 12th it looked like Burnett might go for the finish, but he just continued to box really well. You still have to give Haskins huge credit because he never stop trying to fight back.

At the final bell I had it very wide to Burnett he must have won the fight and the world title.

Paul Hyland Jr V Adam Dingsdale

Paul Hyland destroyed Adam Dingsdale inside a round to move one step closer to a British title shot.

Walking to the ring both men looked relaxed and ready to go.

In the 1st round both men came out looking to be on the front foot and let their hands go. midd way through the round Hyland rocked Dingsdale before sending him to the canvas but Dingsdale beat the count. Hyland then went looking for the finish and landed a hard combination which sent Dingsdale down again, and the referee had no choice but to stop the fight.

James Tennyson V Ryan Doyle

Ryan Doyle’s corner pulls him out at the end of the 6th, but he can hold his head high.

In the 1st both men came out looking to feel each other out. By the middle of the round the punches started to flow and Tennyson rocked Doyle, but Doyle came back well. At the start of the 2nd Tennyson came out looking to be on the front foot. Both men had their share of success. It’s early in the fight but this is shaping up to be a good one. In the 3rd round the punches continue to flow with both men happy to let their hands go. However I think that the better punches are coming from Doyle. Tennyson started the 4th well working off the jab, but still the better and more powerful punches where coming from Doyle.

Going into the 2nd half of the fight I had Doyle 2 up. In the 5th Tennyson continued to land some good jabs and it looked like he was getting a foot hold in the fight as Doyle looked like he was starting to struggle. In the 6th it looked like Tennyson was starting to take control planting his feet and landing some painful looking shots.

At the end of the 6th Doyle’s corner pulled him out. This would be a fight I would like to see again when Doyle has had a full camp because he took this fight at short notice.

Also on the Bill:

Mark Perez: Mark Perez came back and wiped out his opponent in 19 seconds

Sean McGoldrick: Wins a scrappy fight on points.
