Fight Night Review 10th December 2017

fight night, review

In the early hours of Sunday morning Las Vegas gave us a pack night of action. Here’s my fight night review of all the action.

Tevin Farmer V Kenichi Ogawa

Kenichi Ogawa wins a very controversial split decision, to become the new world champion.

The 1st round was very much a feeling out round with both men just trying to find their range, it was a close round to score but Ogawa might have just edged it. The 2nd started well with both men working well off the jab, it was another tight round this time I think Farmer won it. The 3rd another good round this is turning into an enthralling fight to watch. In the 4th Ogawa came out looking to land big shots, it looks like he’s getting frustrated. However he needs to stop looking for that 1 big shot and start throwing combinations. Farmer is looking like he’s growing in confidence because he now knows he can take Ogawa’s best shots. In the 5th Ogawa started well but he was getting caught on the counter. Farmer looks like he’s starting to take over.

Going into the second half of the fight I had Farmer 2 up but it’s a very close fight and a really good fight to watch. In the 6th Ogawa was cut over both eyes, and it looks to me like Ogawa’s punch out put has gone down and he can’t hurt Farmer. In the 7th Farmer picked up where he left off, and Ogawa is starting to look out of ideas. Then midd way through the round Ogawa landed a nice right which rocked Farmer. The 8th started a bit slowly both men working well off the jab but Ogawa was getting caught with silly shots. However at this point in the fight it looks like Ogawa is growing in confidence but it’s not enough for him to win the round. In the 9th Farmer started to look to take control again, although we know Ogawa carries power but he doesn’t seem to be able to hurt Farmer or put him under pressure. In the 10th Farmer just seems able to pick Ogawa off and land at will. It’s a shame that Farmer is not a power puncher otherwise he would have Ogawa out of there. In the 11th it looked like Ogawa was just trying to make it through the fight to the final bell.

Going into the final round I had it very wide to Farmer the only way Ogawa can win would be by knockout. In the 12th it looked like Farmer was going for the finish, but you have to give Ogawa credit for staying in there. At the final bell I had Farmer 10 up.

Francisco Vargas V Stephen Smith

Francisco Vargas wins a wide unanimous decision after the fight is stopped in the 9th.

In the 1st round both men where working well off the jab, both of them getting straight down to work. It was a close round to score but I think Vargas may have just edged it. At the start of the 2nd Vargas picked up where he left off picking his shots well. Smith is boxing well but he needs to keep this fight at distance. In the 3rd Vargas continued to work well off the jab and looking for that left hook to the body. I’m not saying Smith isn’t in this but he’s getting beaten to the punch. In the 4th Vargas continued his attack to head and body. Smith is boxing well but he’s fighting Vargas’s type of fight.

Going into the second half of the fight Vargas has won every round on my card but it’s a closer fight then that. The 5th was probably Smith’s best round but I still don’t think that it was enough for him to win the round. In the 6th Vargas continued just to pick Smith off and he is starting to look out of steam. In the 7th Smith came out looking to land his shots, but toward the end of the round Vargas came on strong but I think Smith won the round. However to have success in this fight Smith needs a knockout. In the 8th Smith was trying to land shots, but Smith needs to stay light on his feet and he needs more head movement because Vargas is able to pick him off. In the 9th Smith started the round well again, but the better work was still coming from Vargas. Midd way through the round the fight was stop because of a very bad injury to Smith’s ear. On my card Vargas will win it wide.

Orlando Salido V Miguel Roman

Miguel Roman scores a 9th round knockout in a great fight. After the fight Orlando Salido announces his retirement.
In the 1st round Roman came out letting his hands go. There’s no feeling out in this both men straight down to business landing big shots. Midd way through the round Roman was rocked. At the start of the 2nd Roman’s legs still look wobbly but he’s still trying to land big shots, but the better work was coming from Salido. In the 3rd Salido came out throwing big shots, but the better work in this round was coming from Roman. This fight is a bit of a throwback no defence just all out action. In the 4th Salido came out looking to land big shots and push Roman back. Then out of nowhere Salido hits the canvas off a hard right hand, he beat the count but his legs are gone but somehow he made it through the round.

Going into the second half of the fight it’s hard to score but great to watch. In the 5th although he was down in the last round Salido is still coming back, but the better work is coming from Roman. In the 6th the action continued and Salido was starting to comeback. Then Roman started to land big shots what a great fight this is. In the 7th both men just continued to land big shots, I’ve got no idea which way this ones going to go. In the 8th there was no break in the action you didn’t need a ring for this one it could have been fought in a phone box. Toward the end of the round Salido hit the canvas again you have to wonder how much more can he take. He beats the count again but he looks like he’s got nothing left. In the 9th although he’s been down twice Salido is still coming forward, then he got caught with a right hand he didn’t see coming he goes down again, and the referee says enough is enough and waves it off.

Comment below and let me know your thoughts especially on that appalling judges decision in the Farmer Ogawa fight.
