Fight Night Review 10th December 2016

David Price,World Championship

On Saturday night Manchester played host to a packed night of boxing here’s my review of all the action.

Anthony Joshua V Eric Molina

Anthony Joshua destroyed Eric Molina in 3 brutal rounds

At the start of the 1st Joshua was working well off the jab but it was very much a feeling out round. In the 2nd Joshua continue to work off the jab Joshua was just waiting to throw his big right hand. At the start of the 3rd Joshua came out swinging and landing big shots. Then Joshua caught Molina with a right hand and Molina hit the canvas but he bravely beat the count, but them Joshua caught him again and the referee had no choice but to stop the fight.

Dillian Whyte V Dereck Chisora

Dillian Whyte wins a close split decision in a great fight.

At the start of the 1st both men came out trying to land shots but I think Chisora just had the better of it.  In the 2nd round both men landed some good shots, midd way through the round Chisora had Whyte backed up on the ropes. In the 3rd Chisora again had Whyte pinned on the ropes but he was smothering his work. At the end of the 3rd it looked like Whyte was blowing. In the 4th Chisora landed some good combinations to both head and body. In the 5th both men landed some good shots, but then Chisora rocked Whyte big time. Then Whyte rocked Chisora, However the better quality punches came from Chisora.

Going into the second half of the fight I had Chisora up by 4. In the 6th both men looked like they were feeling it. In the 7th Chisora landed some good body shots however he is starting to look tired this one was shaping up to be a classic. The 8th was just all out war and Whyte looked like he was ready to go. At the start of the 9th Whyte came out swinging and putting Chisora on the ropes, but both men looked like they’ve got nothing left in the tank. At the start of the 10th Chisora rocked Whyte, but then midd way through the round Whyte rocks Chisora.  At the start of the 11th Whyte landed some big shots but then Chisora took over this was a 50/50 round.

Going into the final round I had Chisora up by 2 but a draw wouldn’t surprised me. The 12th was another close round with both men getting rocked. At the final bell I had Chisora winning by 1, I would love to see a rematch.

Luis Concepcion V Kal Yafai

Kal Yafai puts on a boxing master class to win a wide unanimous decision.

In the 1st round both men came out landing shots but I think Yafai had the much better of it. In the 2nd round Concepcion came out swinging but miss and Yafai was working well off the jab. The 3rd round was much the same but you could see Concepcion getting back into it. In the 4th Yafai was out boxing Concepcion, Yafai was making Concepcion look like a beginner. In the 5th Yafai was doing a good job of countering Concepcion.

Going into the second half of the fight I had Yafai winning everything Concepcion was looking like an ageing fighter I can’t see this one going the distance. The 7th was another good round for Yafai Concepcion was starting to look clueless, at the end of the round Yafai wobbled Concepcion. The 8th was just a good round of boxing Yafai was just picking him off. In the 9th Yafai was still well on top and Concepcion looked like he’d got nothing left. So into the championship rounds we go with Yafai well in front. In the 10th Concepcion hits the canvas off a nice right hand. In the 11th Yafai’s movement was brilliant and Concepcion just couldn’t catch him.

Going into the final round I had Yafai winning every round. The 12th was like the rest of the fight Yafai just bossed it.

Callum Smith V Luke Blackledge

Callum Smith scores a big knockout in the 10th next stop the world title.

Luke Blackledge walked to the ring with a face like stone. Callum Smith walked to the ring looking very focused.

In the 1st round Smith came out swinging landing some good shots to Blackledge’s body. In the 2nd Smith looked to pickup were he left off it looked like Smith could land when ever he wanted, it looked like he just wanted to get some rounds under his belt. In the 3rd round the inevitable happen as Blackledge hit the canvas. In the 4th it looked like Smith was looking for the finish, he looked more like a cat playing with a mouse. The 5th was much the same there was nothing Blackledge could do to hurt Smith.

Going into the second half of the fight I had Smith winning everything and it was getting painful to watch. In the 7th Smith rocked Blackledge but only for a second. Smith started to land some good combinations. In the 8th Smith was landing at will and Blackledge hit the canvas. This fight needs to be stopped. In the 9th you have to give Blackledge credit because he would not quit, I think his corner should pull him out. In the 10th Smith was just teeing off it looked more like a sparring session. Then out of nowhere Smith caught him with a big uppercut and the fight was over.

Luis Ortiz V David Allen

Luis Ortiz knocked out a game David Allen in the 7th round but it was a boring fight

Allen walked to the ring looking focused. Ortiz walked to the ring looking very calm.

The 1st round started slowly both men just feeling each other out. Towards the end of the round the punches did start to flow. At the start of the 2nd Ortiz did try and work behind his jab. At the end of the round Ortiz was rocked but only for a moment.  In the 3rd Ortiz looked like he had found his range, but nothing much happened. Ortiz was winning the fight on the cards but it’s a boring fight.

Going into the second half of the fight I had Ortiz winning everything. Midd way through the 4th Allen did land some good shots but he couldn’t hurt Ortiz. In the 5th Ortiz tried to work off the jab but he needs to start throwing combinations. The 6th was another boring round with not much happening.  In the 7th Allen did try and land shots. Toward the end of the round Ortiz rocked Allen and he couldn’t recover and the referee stopped the fight.

Hosea Burton V Frank Buglioni

Frank Buglioni stopped Hosea Burton in the 12th to win the British title.

Buglioni walked to the ring looking ready to go.  Burton walked to the ring looking continent.

In the 1st round both men came out on the front foot Burton was working well off his jab, Burton seem to be able to land at will. At the start of the 2nd Burton tried to pickup were he left off, but Buglioni did land some good body shots. In the 3rd both men were trying to land shots, I think the better punches were coming from Burton. At the end of the round Buglioni landed some good shots to head and body. In the 4th Burton started to look out of steam and Buglioni landed some big shots. However Burton did come back well. In the 5th Buglioni landed some more big shots but he needs to step back because his smothering his work.

Going into the second half of the fight I had Buglioni up by 4. The 6th was a bit of a scrappy round and Buglioni’s eye was pouring with blood. In the 7th round Buglioni had Burton pinned on the ropes but Burton took the shots well In the 8th the better boxing was coming from Burton but the better punches were coming from Buglioni. The 9th was much the same as the 8th but it looked like Buglioni was getting tired. At the end of the round it looked like Burton rocked Buglioni. So into the championship rounds we go who wants it more. In the 10th the more powerful punches was coming from Buglioni. In the 11th both men had their success at the end of the round Burton hit the canvas. Going into the 12th I had Buglioni up by 6 and Burton looked ready to go then Burton hit the canvas off a big right hands the referee let the fight continue and Burton corner threw the towel in.

Scott Quigg V Jose Cayetano

Scott Quigg gets rid of months of frustration with a 9th round knockout.

In the 1st round it looked like Quigg was just trying to get rid of the ring rust. In the 2nd round Quigg got down to business and started landing some good body shots. In the 3rd round Quigg started to land shots and it looked like it was just a matter of time. In the 4th Quigg was just teeing off and it looked like Cayetano had no answers. In the 5th Quigg was still landing some good shots but it didn’t look like he had the power at this weight.

Going into the second half of the fight I had Quigg winning every round, but I think he needs the stoppage to make a statement. In the 7th round it was becoming a frustrating fight because Quigg had hit Cayetano with some big shots and Quigg can’t get him out of there.  The 8th was much the same as the rest of the fight Quigg landing shots and Cayetano just taking it. At the start of the 9th the inevitable happen as Cayetano hit the canvas off a great right hook.

Conor Benn V Steven Blackhouse

Conor Benn destroyed an over matched opponent in the 1st round.

In the 1st round Benn came out swinging landing some big shots and put Blackhouse down twice, and the referee had no choice but to stop the fight with 1 minute and 7 seconds gone in the 1st.

Katie Taylor V Viviane Obenauf

Katie Taylor puts on a dominant performance to win on points.

In the 1st round Taylor came out swinging landing big body shots. In the 2nd round Obenauf hit the canvas, but to me it looked like a slip. In the 3rd Obenauf caught Taylor with a good shot but Taylor still won the round. At the start of the 4th Taylor continue to land some powerful looking shots. In the 5th Taylor had Obenauf pinned on the ropes but she did well to get out of there. In the final round Taylor continue to land good shots.
