Fight Night Preview 8th September 2018

fight night, review

With the start of the new boxing season fast approaching, it’s that time of the week again fight night preview time. As we head to the second city with the Birmingham Arena hosting a packed night of boxing action.

Amir Khan V Samuel Vargas

Amir Khan will be looking to continue his perfect start to his comeback as he comes into this fight with a record of 32-4 with 20 knockouts. He’s won 5 out of his last 6 fights, but only 1 of those wins has come by knockout. In his last fight he moved up to Super Welterweight to take on Paul Lo Greco at the time a lot of people were questioning whether he could still carry power at the weight. He proved that he could as he wiped out Lo Greco inside the opening seconds of the fight.

Samuel Vargas comes into this fight with a record of 29-3-2 with 14 knockouts. He’s won 4 out of his last 6 fights with 1 loss and 1 draw but like Khan only 1 of his recent wins has come by knockout. Last time out he went the distance with Mauro Maxiliano Godoy only to be held to a majority draw.

I think you have to make Khan favourite for this one however I don’t think he will go looking for the early knockout. I think he will look to take the fight a few rounds to prove to any doubters that he can indeed compete at the weight.

Sam Eggington V Hassan Mwakinyo

Sam Eggington comes into this fight with a record of 23-4 with 15 knockouts. He’s won 5 out of his last 6 fights all of those wins came by knockout. In his last fight he knocked out Peter Kramer in the 4th round to win the vacant IBO Continental title.

Hassan Mwakinyo comes into this fight with a record of 11-2 with 7 knockouts. He’s won 5 out of his last 6 fights, 4 of them by knockout. Last time out he won a unanimous decision over Ambokile Chusa.

Eggington comes into this fight as a big favourite as he is fighting in front of his hometown crowd. I can see him going looking for the early knockout, but if it doesn’t come then he should have the skills to box his way home.

Jason Welborn V Tommy Langford

This fight is a rematch between two local rivals and as if that wasn’t enough it’s also for the British title. This fight will be Jason Welborn 2nd defence of his British title, he comes into this fight with a record of 23-6 with 7 knockouts. He’s won 4 out of his last 6 fights, but none of them by knockout. In his last fight he won a tight split decision over Tommy Langford in their first meeting. He’s done well to rebuild his career after those 2 back to back defeats in 2016.

Tommy Langford comes into this rematch with a record of 20-2 with 6 knockouts. He’s won 4 out of his last 6 fights, but only 1 of them by knockout. His last fight was the first fight with Welborn when he lost that split decision.

Although the night is packed with action this has all the makings of fight of the night, because we’ve got two fighters both in similar places in their careers and both looking to prove they can beat the other. This one could be a real 50\50 fight because neither man carries power so I can see this one going all the way to the judges. It’s going to be a very tight fight but if I had to pick a winner I would say Welborn might just edge it because he already knows he can beat Langford.

Lewis Ritson V Oscar Amador

Lewis Ritson will be looking to continue his perfect start to his professional career as he comes into this fight with a record of 16-0 with 10 knockouts. He’s knocked out all of his last 6 opponents. In his last fight he knocked out Paul Hyland Jnr in the opening round to successfully defend his British title. It’s going to be a very busy few months for him as he scheduled to fight Francisco Patera in Newcastle in October for the vacant EBU title.

Oscar Amador comes into this fight with a record of 10-7 with only 1 knockout. His recent form has been a bit hit and miss as he has lost 3 of his last 6 fights. In his last fight he did get a split decision victory over Lester Medrano.

This fight is very much a tool sharpening job for Ritson, in fact I feel a bit sorry for Amador because he’s got next to no chance of winning. He’s been brought in to give Ritson a workout before his big fight next month, however it is often fights like this that can prove to be something of a banana skin.

Scott Fitzgerald V Craig Morris

Scott Fitzgerald Will be looking to continue his perfect start to his professional career as he comes into this fight with a perfect professional record of 10-0 with 7 knockouts. He’s knocked out 4 of his last 6 opponents. In his last fight he won on points over Lazlo Fazekas.

Craig Morris comes into this fight with a record of 10-1-1 with 3 knockouts. He’s won 4 out of his last 6 fights with 1 loss and 1 draw, but only 1 of his wins has come by knockout.

This could be another very close fight but I can see Scott Fitzgerald just edging it on points, but it should be a very entertaining fight to watch.

I hope you enjoy the fights and please comment below and let me know your predictions.
