Fight night Preview 27th May 2016

Ok fight fans it’s that time of the week again fight night preview time, this week we are in the steel city of Sheffield. For a packed night of championship action with no less than 2 world titles and 2 commonwealth titles on the bill. All the action is live on Sky Box Office from 6pm.

Kell Brook V Errol Spence Jr

There is only one place to start with this preview, this fight will be Kell Brooks first fight since that brave performance he put in against Genndy Golvkin back in September. He comes into this fight with a record of 36-1 with 25 knockouts he has won 5 out of his last 6, 4 of them by knockout. In his last fight he went up 2 weight devisions to take on arguably the best fighter in the world today, he put in a great and brave performance before been stopped in the 5th round.

Errol Spence comes into this fight with a perfect professional record 21-0 with 18 knockouts. He has won all of his last 6 all of them by knockout. In his last fight he beat Leonard Bundu with a 6th round knockout, to set up his first shot at a world title.

In my opinion this is a very risky fight for Kell Brook to take for many reasons mainly the pressure is on him not only because it’s his first fight back but he’s fighting at the home of Sheffield United the team that he is a lifelong fan of. So who’s going to win this one Errol Spence is a young and hungry fighter with knockout power but he has never fought anyone the calibre of Kell Brook and I also think that Kell needs to put in a good performance to prove to himself and the world that he is completely over the injuries he suffered against Golvkin, so I think Brook will win by knockout in the middle rounds.

George Groves V Fedor Chudinov

This fight will be George Groves 4th shot at a world title, he comes into this fight with a record of 25-3 with 18 knockouts. He has won 5 out of his last 6, 3 of them by knockout In his last fight he beat Edurard Gutnecht by unanimous decision to set up this title showdown. A lot of people think this is a must win fight for Groves as he has already challenged 3 times for a world title and has lost on all 3 occasions, so if he loses this time you have to ask two questions one is he good enough to be at world level and were does his career go from here?

Fedor Chudinov comes into this fight with a record of 14-1 with 10 knockouts. He has won 5 out of his last 6, 3 of them by knockout. In his last fight he lost to Felix Sturm by a split decision for the world title.

In this fight we have two fighters both with points to prove George Groves needs to prove to himself and the world that he can cut it at world level, and Fedor Chuinov will want to prove that the loss to Felix Sturm was just a blip. I can see this going long and whoever wins will have a number of options if Groves wins he may look to unify the titles in a rematch against long time rival James DeGale in an all British clash. If Chudinov wins he may look for a rematch with Felix Sturm to complete there trilogy.

David Allen V Lenroy Thomas

David Allen comes into this fight with a record of 11-2-1 with 8 knockouts. He has done well to get his career back on track after a dreadful 2016 with those two back to back defeats to Dillian Whyte and Luis Ortiz. He has won 4 out of his last 6,3 of them by knockout. In his last fight he beat David Howe with a 2nd round knockout to set up this shot at the Commonwealth title.

Lenroy Thomas comes into this fight with a record of 20-4 with 10 knockouts. He has won 4 out of his last 6, 2 of them by knockout. In his last fight he beat Grover Young with a 4th round knockout.

I think David Allen should win this one as he is a lot younger and I don’t think that Thomas can cope with his power, however I do think this fight will go long and it may even go to the judges.

Andy Townend V Jon Kay

Andy Townend comes into this fight with a record of 18-4 with 12 knockouts. He has won 5 out of his last 6,3 of them by knockout. In his last fight he beat Liam Richards on points back in March.

Jon Kays comes into this fight with a record of 22-5-1 with 5 knockouts he has won 4 out of his last 6, but only 1 of them by knockout in his last fight he beat Ibrar Riyaz on points back in May last year.

This fight is a difficult one to call because we have two boxers both with similar records, and at similar points in their careers. However I think Townend might just edge it due to the fact that he seems to be the more powerful puncher of the pair and he has fought at a higher level.

Jamie Cox V Lewis Taylor
Jamie Cox comes into this fight undefeated with a record of 21-0 with 12 knockouts. He has won all of his last 6, 2 of them by knockout. In his last fight he beat Martin Fidel Rois on points

Lewis Taylor comes into this fight with a record of 19-3-1 with 3 knockouts. His recent form has been a bit hit and miss as he has only won 3 out of his last 6 and only one of them by knockout. In his last fight he lost to Luke Keeler on points back in February.

I have to be honest I can only see this fight going one way and that is with a Jamie Cox knockout in the early to middle rounds. If that does happen it may put him in the world title picture. If Luke Taylor does lose you have to wonder can he come back from back to back defeats.

Also on the bill 2016 Olympian Anthony Fowler makes his professional debut against Journeyman Arturs Geikins in a 4 round contest.
