Fight Night Preview 26th August 2017

fight night, preview

Ok fight fans it’s that time of the week again fight night preview time. This week it’s time for the fight the world has been waiting for Mayweather V McGregor. Before all that we have a packed night of action including 2 world title fights. All the action is on Sky Sports Box Office from midnight.

Floyd Mayweather V Conor McGregor

Of course there is only one place to start this week and that is with the fight the world wants to see. After months of build up the waiting is finally over.

Floyd Mayweather comes into this fight with a perfect professional record of 49-0 with 26 knockouts. He has won all of his last 6, none of them by knockout. The last time he won a fight by knockout was back in 2011 when he somewhat controversially knocked out Victor Ortiz in the 4th round. Before this fight Mayweather has not fought in nearly 2 years. His last fight was a unanimous decision win over Andre Berto back in 2015.

This fight is Conor McGregor’s boxing debut so I don’t think anyone really knows what to expect or how he’s going to fight. Will he be able to successfully make the transition from MMA fighter to boxer. Looking back at some of his UFC fights he obviously has knockout power in his left hand so that will be something that Floyd will have to watch out for.

So who’s going to win this so called super fight, well there’s no doubt that Mayweather has far more experience and I think it could be a typical Mayweather performance so lots of moving in and out and only fighting when he has to. The best chance McGregor has to win is to force the pace of the fight and make Mayweather work for every minute of every round. Although both men are predicting quick knockouts I don’t think that’s going to happen I think the fight will start slow and then come to life in the middle rounds. However if I had to pick a winner I would say Mayweather on points.

Gervonta Davis V Francisco Fonseca

Gervonta Davis comes into this fight with a perfect record of 18-0 with 17 knockouts. He’s getting a reputation as a knockout artist having knocked out all but 1 of his opponents. This will be his 3rd defence of his title that he won earlier this year. In his last fight he knocked out Liam Walsh in the 3rd round to retain his title.

Francisco Fonseca also comes into this fight with an undefeated record of 19-0-1 with 13 knockouts. This fight will not only be his first for a world title but also his first fight in the US. However he is no stranger to fighting away from home having done it twice before. This fight will be his first over the championship distance now we will have to see if he’s got enough in the tank to do the full 12 rounds. In his last fight he beat Eliecer Lanzas with a 3rd round knockout.

You would have to make Davis the clear favourite in this one as he has been fighting at a much higher level then Fonseca. I think Davis will look to impress and he will go for the knockout in the early to middle rounds.

Nathan Cleverly V Badou Jack

Nathan Cleverly comes into this fight with a record of 30-3 with 16 knockouts. He has done really well to not only rebuild his career but also to become a world champion again, especially when you consider it looked like his career would be over back in 2015 when he lost to Andrzej Fonfara. He has won 4 out of his last 6 fights all of them by knockout. In his last fight he beat Juergen Braehmer with a 6th round stoppage to win the title.

Badou Jack comes into this fight with a record of 21-1-2 with 12 knockouts. He has won 5 out of his last 6 but only 1 of them by knockout. In his last fight he was held to a draw by James DeGale in their unification fight although many people believe he won the fight.

In this fight we have two world class fighters but you have to make Cleverly the favourite, because this is Jack’s first fight at light heavyweight and no one knows if he will have the punch power or resistance at the bigger weight. However if he can get through the early rounds and take Cleverly into the second half of the fight and down the stretch it could be a completely different fight.

Andrew Tabiti V Steve Cunningham

Andrew Tabiti comes into this fight with a record of 14-0 with 12 knockouts. He has won all of his last 6, 4 of them by knockout in his last fight he beat Quantis Graves with a 6th round stoppage.

Steve Cunningham comes into this fight with a record of 29-8 with 13 knockouts. His recent forms has been a bit hit and miss as he has only won 3 out of his last 6, only 1 of them by knockout. In his last fight he beat Felipe Romero by unanimous decision.

On paper this could be a close fight, but I can see Tabiti winning on points or by late stoppage. Whoever wins it should put them in the world title picture, however if Cunningham does loose you have to wonder out 41 were does he go from here.

Thomas Dulorme V Yordnis Ugas

Thomas Dulorme comes into this fight with a record of 24-2 with 16 knockouts. He has won 5 out of his last 6 fights, 2 of them by knockout. In his last fight he beat Brian Jones with a 6th round knockout.

Yordnis Ugas is a replacement for this fight as Shawn Porter was meant to be on the bill but he had to withdraw for personal reasons. The 2008 Olympic medalist comes into this fight with a record of 19-3 with 9 knockouts. He’s won 4 out of his last 6 fights, 2 of them by knockout. In his last fight he beat Nelson Lara with a 2nd round knockout.

This could be a difficult fight to call as neither man has had much time to prepare for the other. However I think Dulorme will win on points.

Kevin Newman V Antonio Hernandez

Kevin Newman will be looking to continue his perfect start to his professional career as he comes into this fight with a record of 7-0-1 with 3 knockouts. The only blot on his record so far is a draw that he was held to on his debut. In his last fight he beat Pablo Velez with a first round knockout.

Antonio Hernandez will be looking to get his career back on track after losing last time out. He comes into this fight with a record of 9-1 with 2 knockouts. He has won 5 out of his last 6, but only 1 of them by knockout. He lost a tight split decision last time out to Kyorne Davis.

In this fight we have two young fighters both with a point to prove. Neither one of them is a particularly big puncher so I can see it going to the cards, and I think Newman might just edge it.

Enjoy the fights and let’s hope the main event lives up to the hype.
