On Saturday the 9th June Tyson Fury made his much anticipated comeback after nearly two and a half years out of the ring. With his successful comeback now behind him can he still win a world title?
The Manchester arena hosted Fury’s first fight since he beat Wladimir Klitschko for the unified world heavyweight title in November 2015. Saturdays fight was a long time in the making with Fury having to overcome a number of out of the ring problems including depression, despite all that the arena was packed however this fight didn’t live up to the hype.
From the opening bell Fury spent more time dancing around the ring than fighting and you could see that he was very ring rusty he was winning the rounds but it wasn’t an entertaining fight. More than once in the fight the referee warned Fury to stop messing around and start fighting, in the first two rounds I can’t remember him throwing anything of note. Well you can tell how bad the fight was when the Manchester crowd who are knowledgeable boxing fans started booing and getting on Fury’s back. It’s a bit much when the fight in the crowd is more entertaining to watch than the fight in the ring. Finally in the 3rd Fury got down to work and stopped making a mockery of the fight. This work continued in the 4th then at the end of the round Sefri’s corner pulled him out, this again meant the crowd was less than impressed as they started booing and throwing things into the ring.
In his post fight press conference he said that he enjoyed been back in the ring and under the lights, he also said that he was happy with his performance. When he was asked what the future holds for him he said that he wants to fight a bigger opponent and he can win a world title within a year no problem, that is a big statement to make. He is already scheduled to be back in the ring on the 18th August in Belfast, however to reach his ambitious goal he’s going to have to fight someone who can fight back. I think that if he fights another fighter like Sefri and puts in another performance like the one on Saturday night I can see fans starting to lose interest in his career which would mean that he will never get back into the world title picture because the fight won’t sell.
I think before his fight in August he needs to stay in the gym and work on sharpening up his boxing skills and getting more of his weight off. The question on every ones lips is who is he going to fight in August, normally I would suggest that he fights for the British title however that is never going to happen as the current British champion is his cousin Hughie Fury. Many people think a fight with Tony Bellew would be a good option for him but Fury ruled that out in his press conference. So looking at the heavyweight world rankings I think a fight with Alexander Ustinov who has got a record of 34-2 with 24 knockouts, and he’s ranked 10th in the world would be a good fight for him as it would get him back into the world rankings.
I started this post by asking can Tyson Fury still become a world champion once again and the short answer to that question is yes, I may not like him as a person but I do respect him as a fighter. Nevertheless he is only 29 which means that he could have another 10 years left in the ring but he needs to live a boxers lifestyle. If he can get himself fully fit I think any heavyweight in the world would have their hands full with him.
I would like to see him back to his best and back in the world title picture because every British boxing fan would love to see a fight between him and Anthony Joshua this is a fight that both men want because Fury wants the belts back because he never lost them in the ring and Joshua wants to shut Fury up once and for all.
These are just my thoughts but as always I love to hear from you guys can Tyson Fury become a world champion again?
To be honest I don’t know but to fair he does bring something to the game, but as you said on his last performance he still has a long way to go will just have to wait and see cheers Chris.
