Last Saturday in front of a packed out Manchester Arena George Groves put in one of the performances of his career to secure his place in the World Boxing Super Series final. So this now begs the question can he win it.
From the first bell on Saturday night he put on a boxing lesson against fellow Brit Chris Eubank Jr winning the fight 117-112, 116-112 and 115-113 on the judges cards. Now everyone’s attention has turned to the final. However he didn’t only get through to the final he also became a unified world champion after defending his WBA and winning the IBO title. At the moment we don’t know who he’s going to be fighting because Callum Smith is fighting this weekend in the second semi final against late replacement opponent Nieky Holzken after Juergen Braehmer pulled out on Monday due to illness.
Now I have to admit that I was very sceptical about the World Boxing Super Series as you can see from my past post “What is The World Boxing Super Series”but is seems to have been a successful tournament so far. If you’d of asked me a year ago could George Groves win it I would have probably laughed at you, after losing to Carl Froch twice and Badou Jack all in world title fights his career looked all but over. However he’s done a great job of rebuilding his career under the tutelage of new trainer Shane McGuigan his rebuild was completed last summer when at the 4th time of asking he finally realised his dream by winning the WBA world title by knocking out Fedor Chudinov in the 6th round, on the undercard of the Brook Spence bill back in May.
He then went straight into the World Boxing Super Series and took on young Jamie Cox in the quarter finals a fight that he won with a 4th round knockout, that win set up Saturdays big fight. Many people are saying that he’s had an easy run to the final compared to some of the other fighters in the tournament, but as we all know there are no such thing as an easy fight in boxing. The Cox fight could have quite easily been a banana skin and if he hadn’t got his tactics right on Saturday the fight could have been completely different.
So I started this post by asking can he win the World Boxing Super Series and I would have to say yes he can as he seems to be in the form of his life. However there are a number of things to consider firstly who’s he going to face in the final, I think if it’s Holzken it should make him the favourite. However as a British boxing fan I hope Smith wins on Saturday and we can have an all British final. Not only because it will be a big boost for British boxing, but I think him and Smith will be a real 50/50 fight that will get even casual boxing fans interested in the fight which can only be a good thing for the sport as a whole. The second thing we need to consider is how fast can he recover from injury in the fight on Saturday he suffered a dislocated shoulder, so he’s going to have to get back to full fitness and back in training before the final.

Don’t know how he will get on but who ever he fight’s it will be a good night of boxing cheers Chris.
