2016 was another bumper year for boxing, so what better way to kick off 2017 then to look back at some of the best fights of last year.
10. Charle Martin V Anthony Joshua 9th April 2016
Now I know what you’re thinking how this fight can make it onto the fight of the year list, it didn’t go past the 2nd round. Ok I’ll agree the fight wasn’t the longest in the world, but in had a massive impact on the world of boxing and took Joshua from prospect to superstar over night.
9. Anthony Crolla V Ismael Barroso 7th May 2016
It’s never easy for Anthony Crolla after beating Darley Perez to win the world title at the end of 2015, he was ordered to take on his mandatory challenger for his first defence. It was a hard fought fight for 7 rounds before Crolla knocked him out with a body shot.
8. Dillian Whyte V Dereck Chisora 10th December 2016
Now I have to admit after all the bad blood and incidents in the build up I thought it was going to be another one of those fights that was never going to live up to the hype. Oh how I was wrong it was an all out war for 12 rounds, both men giving everything they had. In the end Whyte won a close split decision, this is a fight I would love to see a rematch of in 2017.
7. Scott Quigg V Carl Frampton 2nd February 2016
This was a fight that the world had been waiting for two rivals going at it to see who’s the best. This fight was a bit slow to get going, but when it did it was an all out war. I was in the arena that night and it was a difficult fight to score I had it a draw on my card, with Frampton winning the early rounds and Quigg coming on strong in the middle to late rounds. Frampton won a close split decision. The fight left Quigg with his jaw broken in two places. This is another fight I would love to see a rematch of but that is unlikely.
6. Sam Eggington V Frankie Gavin 22nd October 2016
This fight had it all a local rivalry, a world title shot on the line and a great fight. It was a toe to toe war from start to finish and the 6th round I don’t know about fight of the year but it would win round of the year! Eggington got the win in the 8th round with a stunning knockout.
5. Tony Bellew V Iiungu Makabu 29th May 2016
This fight was Tony Bellew’s dream fighting for a world title at the home of his beloved Everton. However the dream very nearly turned into a nightmare when he was put down hard in the first round. He came back strong in the 2nd and knocked out Makabu in the 3rd to fulfil his dream.
4. Gennady Golovkin V Kell Brook 10th September 2016
A lot of people saw this fight as a miss match but it turned out to be far from it. Brook started the fight well landing some good shots on Golovkin. However disaster struck when an eye injury forced Brook’s corner to pull him out in the 7th, it turned out that Brook had broken his eye socket in two places. However I believe if the fight had of continued there was a very good chance of Brook been the first man to beat Golovkin, as he was up on the scorecards at the time of the stoppage.
This fight was one of the best fights of the year, but also one of the most controversial. Many people had Kovalev winning the fight, but Ward having come off the canvas in the 2nd round won a unanimous decision by 1 point.
2. Keith Thurman V Shawn Porter 25th June 2016
In this fight Thurman out boxed Porter for most of the fight. However Porter came back strong toward the end of the fight but it was to little to late, as Thurman won a unanimous decision. This is another one of those fights that I think all boxing fans would love to see again in 2017 as it was an enthralling fight to watch.
1. Terence Crawford V Viktor Postol 23 July 2016
Terence Crawford out thought and fought Viktor Postol knocking him down twice in the 5th before winning a wide unanimous decision. It was a great fight to watch and in my opinion the best fight of 2016
So that’s my top 10 fights of 2016 sorry if I missed your favourite, I don’t no about you but I can’t wait to see what 2017 will bring. Comment below and let me know what you think and what fights would make your list.
