On Friday Canelo Alvarez and Rocky Fielding shocked the world with the announcement that they are going to fight each other on 15th December at the world famous Madison Square Garden.
Although there’s no question that this is definitely an unlikely match up Fielding is no stranger to causing big upsets as that’s exactly what he did to win the WBA regular world title with that stunning knockout of Tyron Zeuge in the 5th round back in July.
After the fight was announced both fighters took to social media here’s what they had to say:
Nobody seems to be giving Fielding a chance in this fight people are talking like it’s a foregone conclusion that Alvarez is going to win, and ok you probably have to make him the clear favourite because he’s fought at a higher level. Let’s face it last time out he out boxed the previously invincible Gennady Golovkin in their rematch. You have to remember that Fielding is a very good boxer he’s only got one defeat on his record and that came against the newly crowned WBA Super World Super Middleweight and World Boxing Super Series Champion Callum Smith and that was back in 2015.
Another thing that might go in Fielding’s favour is that when Alvarez beat Golovkin he did it using fast hand and foot movement but that fight was down at Middleweight is he going to have the same hand speed and foot movement up at Super Middleweight I know it’s only an extra 8 pounds but that can make all the difference.
So who’s going to win this big fight the bookies have made Alvarez the clear favourite at 1/33 with Fielding at 10/1. However I think the fight could be a lot closer than that. There’s no way Fielding is going to be able to stand toe to toe with Alvarez but if he can keep the fight at range and use his jab and make Alvarez work for every minute of every round then he might have a chance of winning it on points, or with one of his trademark body shots. One thing I do know is for Fielding to win this fight he’s going to have to fight like something out of a Rocky movie. Although if he pulls in out we will be looking at a real life Rocky story.
Boxing is always surprising us and this is definitely one of the most surprising match ups in recent years and if Fielding can do it, it will send shockwaves throughout the whole sport.
As always I love to hear what you guys think can Rocky Fielding do the impossible or is this fight a step too far for him? Please comment below and let me know your thoughts/
