Should Processional boxers compete at the Olympic

The International boxing association earlier this week voted to change the rules to allow professional boxers to compete in the Olympic Games, but is it a good idea? Comment below and let me know what you think.  This new ruling means that from this years games professional boxers will be allowed to compete with amateurs as long as they qualify. The first qualifying event will take place next month with a total of 26 places been made available for professionals.

Is this somewhat controversial move in danger of damaging the sport we all love, as well as the integrity of the Olympics themselves, under the old rules boxing was  one of the only  sports  left  in the Olympics that was still truly for amateurs, and I think that by letting professionals compete the organisers have forgotten completely  what the Olympics are all about.  I know people that are for this rule change will say that a lot of other sports in the games allow professionals to compete such as basketball and football, but these  are all games you play, you score or you don’t you can’t play at boxing! Under the old rules all boxers have to wear protective headgear and they used lighter gloves than what professionals do under the new rules there will be no headgear used and the gloves will be heavier. There is also a danger of there been some serious miss matches because could you imagine the Anthony Joshua that boxed in the Olympics boxing the Anthony Joshua of today he would get seriously hurt as he has more power and experience than he had four years ago. We could also see a young amateur fighting someone like Manny Pacquiao or Amir Khan. Fights like that are just dangerous.  However it’s not just young boxers this could be dangerous for it’s possible we could see retired boxers coming back thinking they could win an Olympic medal.

This is why I think Olympic boxing should stay an amateur sport not only to protect the boxers but the sport itself.  I believe that this will be looked at again after Rio and it will go back to an  amateur sport in 2020.
